Running 41:00 [3]

easy run into the city. won't get time to fit in a run tomorrow. on the stupid am flight to melbourne for the day.

Orienteering intervals 39:00 [4] 5.5 km (7:05 / km)

7x short night-O intervals at bardon park, with 30sec rest inbetween. good session on an otherwise very ordinary suburban bush map. set by wendy, and she'd taken the tracks off the map too, which stuffed me up big time on one course. tried to run straight as much as possible, and run hard up the hills (which were many and steep).

Running warm up/down 30:00 [3]

warm up, warm down and collecting controls.

Running 1:05:00 [3]

run from the campground at deepwater to the beach at agnes waters first 40 mins was along a very sandy track, then the last part on the road into town. nice run. couple of hours swimming and surfing (or attempting to surf) afterwards.

Sunday Apr 25, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

weekend at the beach. had planned some decent training for this weekend, but all I wanted to do was sleep, so I thought it might be a better idea to take it easy for a couple of days till I felt ok again. spent heaps of time swimming though.

Running hills (Anzac Park TT) 28:06 [5] 5.2 km (5:24 / km)

Ususal anzac park run, but in the dark, with ayups. pretty good running with the lights. just a bit hard when there was long grass cos it was hard to see the track underneath. got a massive canetoad lined up in the lights, and kicked it way off into the forest.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [3]

Orienteering 1:10:00 [2]

night o training in toohey forest, set by Lorenzo. good session - really tricky. control picking to start with, then some compass legs. Lorenzo had put out reflector controls, but after the rain everything in the forest sparkled in the rain. heaps of new tracks, and when I ignored them I managed to find the controls fine, but tried to use them a few times and stuffed up massively. not a tough running session, but its what I needed - still haven't recovered from the weekend.

Orienteering 1:12:00 [3] 8.4 km (8:34 / km)

OY at White Rock. shit terrain, shit course, shit map.
first part of the course was average - easy controls, but had to run a bit slow cos of the long grass with heaps of rocks and fallen junk, then 5 was a bingo control on a badly mapped (ie, nothing mapped) hillside with low vis. wasted 10mins or so scouring the hillside and going back out to look for attackpoints on the track which didn't exist. was just about to give up and saw the flag. was ok for a few controls in the rocky stuff (and found a few people who had recently found their way back onto the map). made a big mistake on 14, and ended up too high, and too far along the rock, and was getting too tired and vague to concentrate properly.
nearly called it quits just before heading out to a stupid out-and-back control at 16 (especially as it started pissing with rain as I got to the track). was slow, but ok for the next few controls, but then wasted heaps of time on the massively wrongly mapped last control.
probably didn't help that I was still pretty tired from yesterday, and didn't really have the strength to run hard through the shit for too long, but the course and map were pretty bad.
got some extra strength training afterwards pushing cars out of the mud.

Running long 2:10:00 [3]

long run from Clares, with a fairly big bunch to start, then just wendy, then just me... mt coottha, slaughter falls, simpsons falls, ch9, boscome rd, and back to clares. last loop took a little longer than I thought it would, had only planned 2hrs. tried to work reasonably hard on the hills, and smashed it down ch9, which totally screwed my legs for the rest of the run. tired now. sat at clares for quite a while before I thought I could manage the drive home.

Running hills (Anzac Park TT) 29:54 [5]

first one of these in the morning, and was smashed from the outset. legs still sore from yesterday, and half asleep. started to feel a bit better towards the end, but not enough for a decent time. maybe I need to go to work really early so I can run this in the afternoon again. not sure whether getting up to run or go to work at 5,30 is worse.

saw budda sitting on a log meditating on the top bit of track near the loop. small wtf moment.

Running 50:00 [3]

ran home from work. a lot of running on concrete, so legs were pretty smashed by the end. backpack didn't bother me too much.

Tuesday Apr 13, 2010 #

Running 40:00 [3]

run into the city and back, a bit faster than I'd planned. ran into kieran and olly and stopped for a bit of a chat.

Orienteering race 1:14:02 [5] 11.0 km (6:44 / km)

ACT long champs at Glenbrooke. another really fun course, in a great area, (apart from the wind), but another run that wasn't quite good enough. 1min on 2, then 2mins on 11 and another couple of little wobbles. blah. sick of just not quite getting it right.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [3]

Saturday Apr 10, 2010 #

Orienteering race 41:30 [5] 5.1 km (8:08 / km) +200m 6:48 / km

ACT middle champs at Buckenderra. fun course, and generally a good run, but didn't have quite the intensity with navigation and control flow to go properly quick.

Running warm up/down 30:00 [3]

Event: Snow Treble

Cycling 1:30:00 [3]

morning loop around stromlo with wayne gregson before driving down to the nol race at buckenderra. even got to take waynes carbon scale 20 for a spin. fast! fun!

Orienteering race 16:18 [4] 2.5 km (6:31 / km)

ACT sprint champs at buckenderra. took a while to warm up before the race, and didn't feel too good running, but wasn't too worried (as it was a sprint). had an ok race, just not particularly fast.

Running 32:00 [3]

easy run to get the legs moving again.

Tuesday Apr 6, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Stuffed today, and very glad I don't have to run anywhere. pretty happy with my runs at easter generally, and feeling really good running in the forest again which is great. still some work to do though. none of my runs was clean, and the mistakes were a bit dumb, so can work on improving the little details in my navigation, particularly at the ends of courses when I'm getting tired. lack of fitness showing a bit there.
and then theres that 9mins 30. ah well.

Orienteering race 54:36 [5] 6.8 km (8:02 / km)

Easter day 3, Collector hill, chasing start. Started in a bunch with Mace and Laurina just in front, and Rachel just behind, so was looking forward to a good pack race. Could see Laurina through the first controls, and arrived at the pivot control at the same time, but then she headed out on the other loop. Saw Mace and Zoe a few controls later at one of the controls in the scrappy rock. felt pretty nervous with the poor visibility, especially with some of the longer legs heading out of the forest. felt like I was losing the plot a bit on the last few controls before the finish, but fortunately I was running by myself by then, so my standing still trying to figure what the hell was going on didn't matter too much.

Orienteering race 1:11:47 [5] 10.5 km (6:50 / km) +350m 5:52 / km

Easter Day 2 at Kowen forest. Really great course set by Jo. fast the whole way, but super intense as well.
Stuffed up the start - should have stayed on the vegetation boundary between the eucalypt and pine, but ran straight through the eucalypt and ended up near 2. good little reminder to concentrate. took the track route to the left to 5, and ran low around the hill to the left on the run across to 9. felt like I had some good momentum with the course in the last 3rd of the main part of the course, but hit the wall as I ran through the spectator leg. struggled to concentrate on the last few controls, and was a bit high on the control on the little creek halfway round the loop. really pleased with my run overall - felt heaps better running than I have in ages (years?!) and was able to keep running hard the whole way. yay!

Orienteering race 42:07 [4] 4.3 km (9:48 / km) +210m 7:52 / km

Easter Day 1 at Gudgenby homestead. Very tricky course in the low vis. bumbled along at the start - very cautious, but didn't want to risk losing map contact. really struggled running, and walked up the hills :-(
got through the first part of the course up to the radio control without any real dramas, but then the course got heaps faster and I struggled more and more. came down the hill to 19 at totally the wrong angle and lost the plot a bit - my only tactic was to go to the bottom of the hill and look back up for the control, but then saw that I was near a fence and not a powerline and figured it out. lost about 2.30 there. stupid mistake on an otherwise good run. would be nice to have some legs back.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [3]

Orienteering race 19:55 [4] 3.2 km (6:13 / km)

Easter prologue at ADFA. Fail. Sleep deprived brain miss-read start time (10mins late). I was at the start, but as it was a 'silent start' they decided they didn't need to tell me I was late until after I'd missed it. then it took a while to find a spot in the start list. got 2 mins credit back, but still had an extra 9.30 on my time.
had an ok run after that. got pretty confused as to what the hell Grant was trying to tell us (so I ran around the garden anyway), and then made a mistake there on the leg to 7, (still didn't work it out the second time I went past, so again went round). also didn't figure out the marked passage to 11, and relocated over near 5.
stupidly tired, and collapsed in a big heap for the rest of the day.

Running 25:00 [2]

easy plod down to anzac park and around the ring road. just to check that my legs would actually go. still feeling a bit sick though, hopefully another nights sleep (although a very short one with a 5.30 flight to canberra!) will help.
