Note
This must be the umpteenth Pawtuckaway camping weekend I have attended. I think I have been to every one. It is really one of the best orienteering events in the US, and who would think it coming off a camping weekend with lots of families and kids.
The events have grown over the years. There was always a Blue course, and I'm pretty sure always a Canoe-O, and always the Vampire -O! Certainly that one was the favorite of S&H years ago. A few years ago JJ added the World's Hardest Night O. Posh, many might say, but darkness and the vast woods of Pawtuckaway can be pretty intimidating.
This year a epunch sprint was added to support the senior team, and it was certainly popular among the speedsters. Ross and Ethan Childs battled it out through out Saturday, each one re-running the 2nd course (4 controls, no map, no compass) 3 times, with Ethan eventually winning out with the only sub-two minute time.
All of this fine event is presided over by Lex Bundschuh, with the able help of Pete. It is a lot of work, and in the past Eva Ruutopold was her co-director. Lex is looking forward to Eva's help next year.
This year we went up on Friday, we usually wait until Saturday morning, but I knew I had lots to do this weekend with control setting and retrieving, so I wanted to be there early.
And we were there until the end, and it was great. After returning with my last bag of controls, Alar offered up some fine beer, Lex rested with some wine, and Pete, well, he was packing the camper.
A truly wonderful event put on by great people.
