orienteering race 4:45:36 [3] *** 26.2 km (10:54 / km)
spiked:25/26c shoes: VJ Falcon

HH 14. Starting off behind Joe B. , not looking at map, noticed we were following a pipeline and eventually Joe disappeared and I had to actually find #1 on my own!
Then with Randy, Glen and Stefan, but got away on #3, caught Peggy and Bernie crossing the swamp and trail run to #4, was frankly out of touch along the trail and not until I saw Will(going the other way) did I realize where we were. Bernie led into 4, but I cut the corner leaving it to the trail and came up behind the JJ group. Pulled a bit ahead on the trail run, and was catching Stefan until I followed him off course, Vlad came the other way and convinced me I had missed the turn onto the pipeline. Behind JJ and Vlad into aid station 2.
Third loop was mostly following JJ, Allison and Stefan around Surebridge. Missed 18 trying to contour above them and left aid station 3 ( downed a pint of Ethanol so was feeling much better, plus the 2 Advils from Judy were easing the pain).with JJ barely in sight, but spotted Alison, JJ and 2 cadets going into 20 .
Was going to go straight and left of hill to 21, but heard JJ and Stefan heading for the road and did that. JJ was out of sight, but I was behind Stefan up the trail and he missed the turn so I led out of 21.
Going into 23 I somehow crossed the trail without seeing it and was not sure where I was as I dropped down the hill, spotted 2 boulders and tentatively relocated, then spotted JJ going west out of the control, arrived just as the cadets, Allison and Stefan came down the hill. Cadets pulled away but I came into 24 just behind them. Passed them at 25 as one of them was cramping badly, but he came charging down the hill to 26, as I punched.
Finished weaving through the picnicers at Tiorati.
(does anyone else notice how newer immigrants, seem to enjoy the outdoors, I remember that my grandparents went on these Sunday picnics a lot, my parents less so, my family not at all. We have substituted orienteering, and occasionally we have done a local park picnic, but not a whole day as I see throughout Harriman).
