6hr rogaine with Bart around Catherine Hill Bay.

Approached it as the first big training unit in GOW100 prep, taking it real easy (average HR 139 - and I'm not very fit atm). Got there quite late and spent maybe 10 minutes planning the course, getting to the start line literally 10sec before the start. Also made a last minute call to completely change our planned route. First went down South and cleared all the controls there (some tough bush bashing involved - a lot more than I would expect - Andy would be proud of us!). Then moved up North along the coast and cleared the high pointers there and eventually pushing the tempo to make it back in time (with almost 2 mins to spare!). This has proven to be an ideal route for us - we somehow came 2nd, a few point in front of Glenn and Keelan who have focused on the Western bit that we completely ignored.

Made a few mistakes, the biggest being at 92 which was a pure risk - tricky area where both our maps were already soaking wet and nearly unreadable (I did not quite get the area even after I checked a fresh map). Luckily found it after around 10 mins (probably because of me being very stubborn and refusing to leave those 90 points out there) - unlike Mounty&Greg (winners) who did not find it at all.

Both physically and mentally felt good, the only down point was at about 4.5hr but Cliffbar fixed that. I ran on 2 Cliffbars, 1 GU gel, 2l of water and one Powerade (my classic minimalism).

Thanks to a continuous heavy rain, absolutely epic event. Sometimes I felt like in Amazon rainforest, bashing through dense bush, crossing flooded streams with rather massive leeches. Coastal bits (especially 43-54) were fantastic, rough sea, big swell, waterfalls pouring down the cliffs ... I don't think I was ever THIS wet.

Ultrasprints in Leichhardt Park - so much fun!

#1 - could not get into the map at all or figure what to do, where to go, which controls to punch, which not, got completely lost in the maze ... humiliating. Plenty of mistakes and 2 minutes of penalties #meh
#2 - getting into it, still some mistakes, hesitations and 30'' penalty
#3 - clean and fast run, only a few little hesitations and no penalties - finally!

Quick lunch intervals - 4x1km with 500 m recoveries. Legs tired and so heavy that my interval pace was 3:30-3:45, not impressed, suffered through it...

Strength 30:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel-Kayano 22

Time to get some body strength back. Had very tired lower back after orienteering and also need to work on my leg strength. So the plan is to add two gym sessions per week.

Note

QBIII - Given the amount of bush races I ran in the last year (0) and pretty poor fitness only two weeks back into training, I did not expect any miracles. So despite some stupid mistakes I'm really happy with my runs and results. Also realised how much I missed proper orienteering. I have to stop being lazy and travel more often to state/national leagues...

QBIII - Sprint - Coffs Campus

Map looked pretty straightforward but the course was quite tricky, struggled to read the map in the central bit. Again started fast, leading until 3 and then total blow up to 4. Still don't get the how/why of this mistake but 1:20 in a sprint is just way too much. Then another stupid mistake (read the bloody descriptions man, or at least map) to 9 - another 30'' gone. Quite demotivating but from then on managed to run nearly clean race (1x10' hesitation), time wise on par with Andrew Barnett and Shep, 2 minutes faster then Andy.
