Running 40:00 [3] 8.0 km (5:00 / km)

warm up and cool downs
11 AM

Orienteering 16:58 [3] 3.0 km (5:39 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talon 190

The Virgin flight delay in the morning was an obvious pain, but I wasn't too stressed about it. In fact I would have been quite happy to save my energy for the Middle race. It was a great day in Tassie after the fog cleared.
Got off to a pretty good start but took two fall very early, before #6 on the wet ground and took it pretty easy on the paved areas after that. The Inov-8's just had not grip at all.
Missed the best route choice to #7 but worked out quickly where the control was. Also missed the same route to 17. Otherwise it was a really fun sprint race but I felt l had trouble getting up to max speed because of the complex navigation.
4th was a bit of a surprise, my best non-bush sprint result ever I think. But annoying to still be beaten by the juniors.

Orienteering 36:04 [3] 6.0 km (6:01 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 280

I didn't take the most direct route to one (going via 11) but was happy not to waste too much time as it was difficult getting into the map.
2- ran pretty straight and spotted the control early, and Jimbo (2mins) running out of it. 3- went hard trying to close the gap to Jim. 4- Took it straighter than Jim, who headed left to the ride. Somehow missed it slightly to the right and saw Jim heading to 5 but it took me a while to realise he had already found 4. Doubled back and was annoyed to lose 38secs. 5- ran hard through the marsh and plantation and hooked round to the left at the control. 6- Chasing Jim hard again 7- Across the marsh, didn't find the best route and finally passed Jim as we headed out into the open paddocks. 8- ran hard and used the water dams to hook left into the control. 9- Annoyed with my compass work here- drifted too far right and again Jim back in front. Lost 12secs 10- Was pretty easy, spotted the rocks. 11- Wasn't sure how to attack this one because the marsh looked very slow. But basically ran it straight but it would have been faster heading a bit left and missing the 2nd marsh. 12. Compass up the hill and past Grant McDonald. 13. Tried to run straight and fast. 14. Thought I ran it ok but drifted a bit to the right. Don't know how I lost 30secs to Simon though. 15. cross the creek and run to the junction. 16. Run hard up the hill and spot the right rocks. 17- Pick your spot to run through the marsh then contoured around the hill and spot the rock in the marsh. 18- ran hard on an angle up the hill then pick the small gully and hit it well- 1st on this split. 19- Left the control to the right and crossed the creek where it was easy then smashed it up the hill- won another split. 20- Looked to attack it from the ride to the left but thought it looked easy just going straight and Rachel Effeney was leading me into control. But stopped to soon and was off put by and extra little gully in there. Backtracked a bit and really didn't know what to do for a while. Then climbed up a bit higher and found it but thought it was dodgy- Lost 45secs. 21- I don't know what the story was with this control placement because I ran straight down the right gully and it wasn't there, instead 20m up the hill on another small gully. 22- Ran angrily and hit it straight on.
Not happy with being nearly 5mins behind Julian. I was equal with Muz until 19 but lost 1min to the finish- but he should be happy with his run. I'd like to be running closer to Jules on more of the legs.
4th place.

Road Cycling 50:00 [3] 30.0 km (1:40 / km)

I rode the last 30km of the Tour of California. Made a good break on the final descent and although my lead was out to 50secs at one point I wasn't strong enough to beat Chris Horner on the climb to San Jose.

Also multitasked by studying the maps for the weekend races. Looking forward to Littlechild Creek!

After another day of trekking the Strezeleckis I went for an evening paddle with Kathryn and Jen (in Red7) and me in Jen's Spirit. Really nice night on the pondage, not much wind and pretty warm. Enjoyed the paddle but lacking a bit of strength.

I didn't want to push myself too hard so I skipped the long race. Instead followed Kathryn around heckling her.
