Orienteering race 53:45 [4] 7.93 km (6:46 / km) +41m 6:36 / km

Day 2 of the US Masters Champs in Minnesota.

It was much cooler today, which suited me well. I felt much better physically, and never got to the 'death slog' feel that I had the day before. I did, however, feel the pressure of the unexpected lead heading into day 2. I once again started fast and nailed the first two controls. I felt confident to 3, but never turned with the slope on the last hill before the control, and ended up scratching my head in a parallel situation. I climbed back up the hill and relocated, losing almost 3 minutes.

The rest of the race felt rushed and rarely smooth, but also never turning into a disaster. I left another 45 seconds or so on 5, but nothing worse than 5-10 seconds on any other leg. It was only good enough for 4th on the day on RedX, a minute behind the flying Zhyk, but my lead from the day before was enough to win a competitive M40 ahead of Maricel and Kenny, and RedX ahead of Wyatt. Really fun to compete again and feel competitive!

Day 1 of the Masters Champs in Minnesota, running M40.

I was very excited and started way too fast. After three controls i realized that i had no chance of sustaining this pace and slowed way down. The rest felt like a slog, but the terrain was so delightful that i didn't mind. I was mostly clean, except for two 30-second mistakes and a bad route choice on 7-8 that cost about 1:30.

Beautiful woods, great map. Really nice to be out here and to see some friends too.

Orienteering 1:04 [5]

We had the first session of GrizO's orienteering after-school program today. We are running it as part of the free Flagship program offered to Missoula students in several schools. We are starting by piloting it on Tuesdays at Washington middle school. We had 14 kids signed up, but only 6 showed up, since others still have a week of fall sports left.

We have a solid group of four volunteers running the show: Alli and I, plus Kim from GrizO, and Jack, a UM student doing an internship with Flagship.

It was good to start with a small group. Three of them had come to our events before, and three were brand-new, so we needed to balance the levels we taught at.

The session started with general flagship introductions and snack. Then we split off into groups by activity (there is also a girls' empowerment group and a cooking/crafting group at the same time as us). After a rather awkward introduction and exchange of names, we walked over to Lions park, which has been mapped courtesy of Jon Campbell.

I did my usual introduction to orienteering schpiel, made much easier by the fact that several kids had done it before, and showed a YouTube video that, I think, highlights orienteering in a cool way.

Then, while Alli and Kim put out cones and SI boxes, Jack and I led a game of one fish - two fish - red fish - blue fish, thanks to Barb's recommendation.

We then did an SI demo (we just bought the schools/training kit from Scraborough Orienteering, and I am loving the SI app for small event administration), and I handed out maps for a very short intro course that we all walked around together.

After that, each kid got an SI, and headed out on their own course. I designed five different courses, each about 300-400m with 4-5 controls. The kids could do as few or as many courses as they wanted. To my surprise, each kid did at least three. Two kids did all the courses, and one of them ran two courses twice! They then wanted to know how fast I could do a course, so that's the 1:04 of training for me for the day. :)

We wrapped up by asking them to pick up a control each, and walked back to the school. We have nearly two full hours with the kids, and we were back a few minutes early. Next time we will do a cool-down game as well.

Anyway, I think this first session was really successful, and I am feeling good about continuing. I think four is the right number of volunteers, especially as the number of kids will grow in two weeks. We will have to be creative once the weather gets bad, but having the Playfair Park map (basemap courtesy of Gord Hunter) nearby gives us more options.
