Orienteering 21:12 [3] 1.65 mi (12:51 / mi)
ahr:129 max:141

Putting out controls for the day event.

These were the first events for which we charged money, and the turnout was lower than it had been. We got about 38 individuals at the night-O (which exceeded expectations!) and about 17 during the day (which was well below expectations.) We'll have to see if attendance increases as we head into spring and aren't going up against skiing on the weekends.

The events themselves went pretty well, including testing out epunch for the first time. We had a snafu with a malfunctioning generator during the night-O, which means we were unable to do live results, but we should be able to fix that by the next event. A huge shout-out to Valerie and QOC for donations of epunch equipment, and to COC and OCIN for generous loans of equipment for the season.

When collecting controls, two units were missing. Alli then spotted two boys walking around, whom she had seen in the vicinity of controls earlier. She asked them if they had seen SI boxes (showing them what those were), and the boys pulled the missing boxes out of their pockets and surrendered them... Close call. We certainly have to be careful with them, especially in urban venues, and add warning labels.

Orienteering 50:00 [1]

Putting out controls and SI units for the Night-O. This took longer than I had anticipated, and so I finished in the dark, and just in time for our first start.

If the event you are putting on is a Night-O, that means there is time to get out and ski in the morning. We went to Lubrecht and spent about an hour and a half skiing with Inara, before taking turns to do short loops on our own, with Persik attached to a harness this time. Lovely snow once again. Persik did ok on the harness, but I am looking forward to having him trained and using the shock collar.

Skiing (classic) 1:02:56 [2] 6.25 mi (10:04 / mi) +168m 9:18 / mi
ahr:87 max:110

We had Presidents' Day off, and Inara had daycare, so Alli and I took Persik and went up to Lubrecht to ski. We set out on the long 17km loop, classic skiiing. Persik did great for a few km, but after a while he dove into the woods to follow some scent and didn't reappear. We skied back and forth for a while looking for him, then eventually headed back to the car to refuel and plan a search. Once warmed up and refueled, I headed back up towards where we had lost him and, after about a km, here he comes, trotting happily down the ski trail towards me. Little stinker! The shock collar is in the mail.

Skiing 30:36 [1] 4.23 km (7:14 / km) +31m 6:58 / km

Once we got him back, we headed out on a shorter loop, this time with the dog attached to me. It was pretty scary to lose him like that in a huge wilderness area and a big relief to get him back. The following day, we got a call back from the forest management, whom we had left a frantic message with after losing him. They said it was good that we found him, since the area of the woods where we lost Persik was home to a wintering wolf pack.
