Event: QOC Occoquan

Orienteering 40:00 [1]

Coaching a Mid-Atlantic Junior Team session, the first of the fall season. We had six juniors, including three new ones, one of which was Samantha Walker. Very cool. We did a control picking exercise, and I ran around, taking turns shadowing them for a bit and giving feedback. A good group. I was worried we'd lose critical mass after Turner and Josh went off to college and Sam L moved, but it looks like we have some reinforcements.

Afterwards, Inara and I set up the Animal-O again. We need to start advertising it on the QOC event pages so people know what it is.

No time to run a course as we had to leave early.

Cross-Training 20:00 [1]

I tried out the new Hydrow rowing machine that we got for Alli. Alli gave me technique tips to make sure I did not immediately break myself. Rowing is hard.

Running 42:07 [2] 5.53 mi (7:37 / mi) +65m 7:21 / mi

Lunchtime run on the Mall. There was a US WWII tank there, driving around. Cool. Also, a large number of people in NRA-related hats. Less cool.

In the beginning of the run it felt like my left leg was almost dragging. I think I was avoiding engaging my glutes, trying to protect the strained part of the muscle. This caused discomfort and a weird stride. During the course of the run I tried to correct this by lifting my left leg more and engaging the glute and hamstring. This clearly evened out my stride. Need to work on this, as well as healing the strained part of the glute.

Cross-Training 50:00 [1]

I think I am starting to get over this cold that has plagued me ever since California. But I have most definitely not gotten over the disappointment of my performance in the middle distance in California. I need to rethink my training going forward, even within the frame of being on the brink of injury all the time.
