Orienteering race 50:00 [3] 5.6 km (8:56 / km)

Orienteering! As the final act of a really enjoyable weekend in Boston, we went orienteering! We drove to NEOC's local event at Great Brook Farm, along with Ross&Sam and family, and Cristina&Melissa and family. The kids, to varying degrees, participated in Navigation Games' excellent Animal-O activities, while parents hung out, corralled said kids, did their own races, or ran the activities (mostly Cristina).

Animal-O is an excellent way to provide a fun activity for small kids at O events. I wonder if it makes sense for QOC to copy this for their events in order to attract greater participation by families with younger kids, and ease the transition for those kids to running actual courses...

Once Alli got back from her brown course, I went out for a jog on green and had a great time. I just love orienteering. I was moving slowly and gingerly, which often leads to lazy navigation. I felt that creeping in early in the course and tried to refocus myself, which went pretty well. I did manage to find a wasp nest on the way to 6. I got stung on the arm and managed to fight off 3-4 more wasps who landed on me.

In the detailed rocky area towards the end of the course, it was hard to make sense of the map. Apparently there was an enlarged version available at registration, but I was not informed of this when registering. I lost about 2:30 on the second to last control, when I could not figure out where it was supposed to be from the map.

But overall, a fun course in an area that's perfect for a local event - good trail network, ample parking, plenty of actual technical terrain, and an ice cream shop and petting zoo right on the premises!

Spinal injection at the L5 level. If this doesn't improve things, guessing that surgery may be the next option.
