Orienteering race 42:00 [3]
shoes: VJ Supra Fall 2015

Billygoat 2017 at Ward Pound Ridge

I was excited to stand on the start line of the Billygoat once again. This race is one of my favorite traditions of US orienteering, and I make every effort to attend each year. It was great to have Alli running the Pygmygoat this year. We are both really thankful to Pavlina for agreeing to watch Inara while we ran. The baby was contentedly asleep when we collected her afterwards.

Also, thanks to Kenny for keeping us company on the long drives there and back, and being willing to drive the entire way home. A long day of driving with an unhappy Inara in the back seat!

Given my shape, I figured that the group of Jordan, Will, Giacomo, and Robbie Graham would be too fast for me, but thought that I could run with the second pack, which I expected to include Kenny, Wyatt, Ian, Patrick Denzler, Ethan, Sergei G and perhaps Peter Z and AJ.

This turned out basically correct. The leaders disappeared quickly, but the others I mentioned were right around me, along with Niels, Andreas Wibmer, and a fit Alan Young. The pace was pretty quick early on, and I struggled to keep up on some of the early climbs. However, it was clear that everyone around me was working just as hard , so I figured the pace would back off a bit, which it did. After a few controls Ian and Ethan seemed to disappear, but everyone else remained.

A couple of times I found myself taking different lines through terrain than most of the group, but we tended to come together each time.

On the way to 9, the group split. Niels and I led a pack over the top of a hill, while Wyatt and Robbie ran around on the trails, taking half the pack with them. After coming down the hill, I was crossing a stream and fell, hitting my left kneecap hard on a rock. I didn't think much of it, and kept going, worried more about cleaning mud off my map than the knee.

In a few steps, it became clear that something was wrong. I had trouble bending the knee, especially on down hills. I made it to 9 with the rest of the back, but was losing ground quickly on the way to 10. I decided to walk for a while and see if it would pass, like it often does. It didn't. I walked to 11 and decided to call it a day when movement wasn't any better. Of course, I was at the furthest point from the finish, but walking didn't feel too bad, and so I limped home, in time to see Jordan race away from Will and Giacaomo for then win, and in time to cheer in Alli finishing the Pygmygoat. So proud of her!

Still not sure what's wrong with the knee. Hoping it's just a bad bruise, but I think a meniscus tear is possible too. Will monitor. Very disappointed to have to quit the race, especially such a fun race.

Thanks to the organizers for a wonderful Billygoat. I really enjoyed myself despite not finishing. And as always, really fun to see many good friends!

QOC local event at Patapsco Granite

I did the Green course, not wanting to wreck myself before the Billygoat. This is one of my favorite QOC areas, and the course setter Kim Jepsen took good advantage of it, sending us right off the bat into the detailed rocky area near the start. I wish we had more terrain like this around here!

Really enjoyed my run, with almost no one else out there in the woods with me. Some hesitations in the rocks, and a minute lost on 12, when I lost focus temporarily between my attack point (the ruin on the slope) and the control. Clear otherwise, and nice cruisey speed.

Cross-Training 1:30:00 [1]

Long elliptical session while watching a webinar. This felt hard. It has been a long time since I've done 90 minutes of exercise at once. The Billygoat will be a struggle.
