Orienteering 1:00:00 [1]

An attempt at the CNYO Rogaine with Kat. At noon, we were ready to go, with all the equipment prepared and route planned out. My only worry was Kat's feet, which get blisters notoriously easily due to "exceptionally pointy heels." Add to this brand-new shoes (albeit two pairs), and it's not surprising I was uneasy. Unfortunately, Kat started having foot trouble right from the start. We made adjustments at each control, and she soldiered on for three hours or so before it became clear that it just wasn't happening. Disappointing, but a good lesson, and hopefully we will be better prepared next time.

Running 29:37 [2] 4.94 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: 2007 model Falcons

Easy jog with Kat on trails on the South Mountain map in New Jersey.

Note

So I guess I will start logging my exploits again. I have moved back to the US after four (!!) years in Uppsala and am adjusting to life as a recreational orienteer. The plan is to train whenever I feel like it and do whatever I feel like until I find someone who can solve my various injury problems. It is sad to leave Sweden on these terms, but it was an awesome experience for me, and I would highly recommend OK Linne to anyone interested in trying the Scandinavian club lifestyle. Kat and I will be moving to a new apartment in New Haven in two weeks, and I am looking forward to rejoining the US orienteering scene and, hopefully, doing some things to make it better.

Note

Since I haven't logged anything all summer, I should note that my training consisted of a bunch of orienteering in the Dolomites while coaching the US juniors during JWOC (it is so much fun and rewarding to spend time with our juniors! If you are reading this and happen to run into a junior at a local o-event, take the time to say hi and talk to him/her: they are a great bunch of young people who are quickly getting better at orienteering and having fun as they do it.) I then raced the spectator races of the Italian 5-days, coming 4th in the very prestigious Men's 21Short class and just missing out on the prizes, consisting of some local ham and honey. :( After the Dolomites, I was in Budapest for two weeks and went for a few runs there, including a couple of sprint training sessions with the Hungarian WOC Team courtesy of Csaba. And that's it. Not much other training during my time in Russia or in NYC.
