Hiking 1:00:00 [3]

Climbing Mt.Princeton (14197') with Kat and feet. I would happily have put this down as more than an hour of training, as it felt like hard work most of the way up, but feet only put down an hour... It was fun, but i really felt the altitude towards the top and had to stop a bunch of time to catch my breath. Also, it wasn;t the easiest trail to follow, with lots of rock to scramble over and mini-summits to go up and down on the ridge before getting to the main summit. Still, it was a lot of fun, and seeing a pack of mountan goats on the road when we came down was a nice bonus!

Running 15:00 [2] *** 1.76 mi (8:31 / mi)
shoes: 2006 VJ Falcons

Warm-up and cool-down. Felt nauseous at the start, almost threw up right there and then.

Orienteering race 1:30:54 [4] *** 12.39 km (7:20 / km) +410m 6:18 / km

US Champs day 2 at Buena Vista.
One of the most enjoyable courses I've run in the US in a long time. Very challenging, but not unfairly; good visibility, but not good enough to make orienteering trivial; and great course setting.
I didn't have a perfect run, and could have been about 4-5 minutes faster, but i avoided major mistakes, which were easy to make here, and ended up 4th on the day and overall, behind Swampfox, Eric, and Will, who all had impressive runs. Gotta say, though, i am tired. It's been a long summer of orienteering, and i am ready for a break. I think next summer i will cut down on the number of races i do: i've run exactly 20 in July and August, and that seems like a real high number right now.
An awesome run by Kat on red (2nd in F21!!) completed this fine day.

Hiking 10:00 [3]

Climbing up the Great Dune at Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado. Parts of the dunes were covered with hail, which made for some spectacular scenery!!! Climbing up took about 40 minutes, down - a lot less, and included rolling down a couple dozen meters. Kat, Will, and i had a great time!

Warm-up, cool-down

US Champs Day 1 at Buena Vista.
A so-so run - more mistakes than i should have made on a not-too-challenging course, including 2:45 lost on number 11. Also, not a great physical effort as i didn't feel very motivated at the start and failed to attack the course. The result - 8th place, over 11 minutes behind an impressive Swampfox! Surely, living at altitude helps, but he still kicked our butts. If that wasn't enough of a wake-up call, then finding myself behind Greg in the results was! These 40+ year-olds are getting fast!!!

Orienteering 30:00 [1]

Map hiking around the model event.
Went white-water rafint afterwards with Kat and Anna. Cold, wet, and fun!

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2] 1.76 mi (8:31 / mi)
shoes: 2006-2 VJ Falcons

Before and after the Middle Distance A-meet day.

Orienteering race 46:16 [4] *** 7.3 km (6:20 / km)
spiked:16/18c shoes: 2006-2 VJ Falcons

Middle distance A-meet day First with the Most in Wyoming. Legs felt tired after climbing The Wall during the relay the day before, but seeing a fine elk stampede at the start gave me some inspiration, and so i took off pretty fast. I ran a very clean race, with just a couple of bobbles, but just didn't have the legs to beat Mook or John F., neither of whom had raced the relay (it's a handy excuse, at least...) Anyway, a fun day and a good result, followed by a spectacular drive down to Buena Vista through the valleys and mountain passes of Wyoming and Colorado.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2] 1.18 mi (8:28 / mi)
shoes: 2006 VJ Falcons

Before leg 4 of the Crystal relays, spectating as i warmed up.

Orienteering race 53:11 [4] *** 7.45 km (7:08 / km) +375m 5:42 / km

Crystal Relays at the 1000-day.
Team CSU: Ross (1st) - PG (1st) - Kat (making her debut in a CSU shirt - also 1st) - Boris (1st).
Everyone ran well, and i was handed a huge lead and just needed to run safe to make sure i held it. I took the safest route choices i could and ran a virtually clean race, but was still very tired on the hills and struggled to even walk up The Wall, a steep ~50m near-vertical climb near the end of the course.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2] 1.18 mi (8:28 / mi)
shoes: 2006-2 VJ Falcons

Before the Team Fundraiser sprint. The cooldown consisted of three hours or so of prairie golf with Clem. I shot 60 for 9 holes, a bit worse than Peter Goodwin's score of 32...

Orienteering race 21:07 [4] *** 2.91 km (7:15 / km) +135m 5:53 / km
spiked:9/12c shoes: 2006-2 VJ Falcons

US Team Fundraiser Sprint.
Worked the start for a while, then went a ran the course. Was doing ok until making a parallel error at 8 and losing a full minute there. Ended up 3rd behind Eric and John F. Definitely did not have the speed to match Eric's time on the day.
Afterwards, got to spectate and referee the Senior-Junior Team challenge, organized by Peter as an awesome fundraiser. Despite my best attempts as the referee, the Junior Team snatched victory from the jaws of Eric at the very last moment...

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2] 1.11 mi (9:01 / mi)
shoes: 2006-2 VJ Falcons

Before the Night-O champs, trying out the lamp.

Orienteering race 1:55:00 [3] 11.0 km (10:27 / km)
shoes: 2006-2 VJ Falcons

US Night-O Champs.
Not the most pleasant experience. Messed up the first control badly, then picked up the place, ran well for a while, then had my lamp run out of juice and leave me in complete darkness in the middle of a pretty dense aspen grove a couple of km away from the finish. Ended up climbing some hill to spot the lights of the finish and stumbling blindly towards the lights for a while and finally making it back, cold, hungry, and pissed off at myself for not having a back-uo light.

Running 21:50 [2] 2.65 mi (8:14 / mi)
shoes: Asics 2006

Easy morning jog from the Olafsens' (and Erin Nielsen's) house in Sandwich down the road past the field the wedding was in. Beautiful morning. Before going for the run, I collected the rest of the controls from yesterday's orienteering course set on the Olafsen property by Daddy-O.

Orienteering 13:52 [3] 1.06 km (13:05 / km)
shoes: Asics 2006

Running the orienteering course set by Daddy-O at Erin's wedding in the afternoon. This was set on the Olafsens' property, on a map surveyed by the bride and groom and updated by Daddy-O. Lots of fun, though i made a ton of mistakes on the 1:2000 map and got soundly beaten by the new Mrs.Nielsen, who covered the course in 9:28!! Well, i shouldn't take victory away from the young bride on her wedding day, right? :)

Running 15:00 [2] 1.76 mi (8:31 / mi)
shoes: Asics 2006

Warm-up, cool-down.

Running race 13:33 [5] 2.3 mi (5:54 / mi)
shoes: Asics 2006

Running the 3rd leg of the Sandwich Old Home Week Triathlon. My team was made up by Steve Olafsen at the very last minute and consisted of a Danish guy named Lars, who is a friend of Kristoffer's family; a girl named Devin, who is friends with Greta Olafsen, and myself to do the running after they handled the 50 or so meter swim and the 3-mile bike ride. I ran my leg well, feeling pretty fast, and picked up a bunch of places, ending up in 6th overall, and 1st team co-ed. We got blue ribbons. :)

Running 32:50 [3] 4.24 mi (7:45 / mi)
shoes: Asics 2006

Running around Fort Tryon Park in New York. Nice big hills!

Running 47:30 [2] 6.13 mi (7:45 / mi)
shoes: 2006-2 VJ Falcons

Running to the clubhouse, to the start of the course and back home from the finish.

Orienteering 1:15:30 [2] 7.6 km (9:56 / km)
shoes: 2006-2 VJ Falcons

Test-running the H18E course for Linne's national competition this weekend. Felt nice to be back in Swedish woods!!! Orienteered reasonably well, but got tired and my hamstring started hurting towards the end (it's been hurting again since the WOC sprint or so). Off to the States tomorrow, first to Erin's wedding and then the 1000-day.
