This was my first real night-o experience (other than walking a white course), and it was a good one. Overall, I had a fairly good race, with a few bad legs.
#3 was lousy... I ran confidently to the control, and it wasn't there. I lost 5:45 trying to find it, before finally going out to the power line to relocate. I should have taken my time initially! I had a little bobble on the way to #5... I came out to the road, checked to verify where I was, but verified wrong--ran the wrong way along the road about 20 meters. #7 was the longest leg of the course, and I had another big chunk of lost time. I missed my initial attack point, but most of my lost time was due to my hobbling gait on a long run, rather than the mistake. On #11, I had a plan to mainly skirt around some green, but on the way, I changed my mind, and cut through. I got in some thick stuff, and by the time I fought my way free, I was back on my original planned route. AP says I didn't lose time, but I definitely lost at least a couple of minutes there.
The takeaway lesson from the course is that it is hard to read terrain at night.
