Training run on Greg Ahlswede's Shickshinny essentially KP map on Sandy Fillebrown's Usynligo Advanced 4.4 km course. We were in the land of the giants where everything - pits, boulders, cliff bands - was huge except reentrants were shallow compared to Southern Indiana terrain. Coal mining made a mess of the terrain but it makes for great orienteering.
First time using Usynligo so needed to get used to the slight delay when finding the feature but it is definitely a great training tool.
The course was well-planned with the first couple of controls in the area with more normal features and gradually introduced the giants' playground. I often struggled with up and down and the difference between a mapped rock band and an unmapped rock band - I think some of my problems were just because the area hasn't been completely field checked. C1 - C4 were pretty good, went much to low for C5 but got to see an amazing pit that is big enough it shows up on the satellite view but looks like a small rocky depression on the map. Thought I had found C6 and decided to call it a day and really found it as I was walking E to the trails - the difference between the rock bands on the southside of the of depressions was much less than the map suggested.
Really cool area that I definitely want to come back to. I even heard cicadas in the distance - first time hearing Brood X this year as they haven't invaded our neighbourhood in Indy
Greg's tour of Scranton was great and made the whole area one of the possible retirement spots. Definitely worth the drive!
