orienteering race 1:07:02 [4] *** 5.3 km (12:39 / km) +200m 10:38 / km
12c weight:165lbs shoes: Icebug Spirit OLX

OLOU Bernheim Forest red course. Dylpop started a few minutes behind me and caught me going up the big hill from 4 to 5. But he miscounted reentrants and lost the chance to just follow me in to 5, and I lost him again until halfway between 8 and 9. I beat him into 9 by a couple steps, but he easily outdistanced me going up the hill to 10, and had disappeared from sight by the time I left 10. Time-wise he beat me by ten minutes, but without the mistake on 5, it should easily have been 16-17. My run was pretty clean, just physically slow.

Jamie was second on green; Jordan was second on yellow.

miscellaneous 30:00 [2]

Washing the salt and dirt off the van and car.

Note: Then off to St Joe's Trivia Night fundraiser, joining a team of Cedarcreek, Orunner, Orunner's brother and two couples in demolishing all other teams.

Miami Whitewater.
One of the big challenges of re-mapping this park is that several streams have changed course. Old stream bends are not completely accurate. It throws your mind at first, then you realize that you need to adjust the stream. Aerial photos and lidar are helping with that.

Union County O' Training. No school Monday so we got together today, even though a number of kids had conflicts. Five kids from the middle school and four from the high school. In small teams, the kids picked up the 9 advanced level controls that been left in the woods after last Sunday's event at Woodland Trails, then went for a treat at Powerhouse Pizza in Camden.

orienteering race 2:26:38 [4] *** 9.7 km (15:07 / km)
20c weight:164lbs shoes: Icebug Spirit OLX

"Purple" course at Woodland Trails Scout Camp, set by Tom Svobodny. A chilly -6C with a light breeze. Snow began falling late in the race and quickly accumulated close to 10cm. The minimum possible distance was at least a kilometer longer than indicated on the map, unless one was capable of crossing the dangerously thin ice on Four Eagles Lake. Definitely a route choice suitable only for birds or perhaps a very lightweight squirrel (as one orienteer found to his dismay - fortunately he lived to tell the tale and after changing into dry clothes, actually helped out with control retrieval).
