7c shoes: A W Journey 2

SAR navigation training course at Prince William Forest Park, VA. This was rogaine-type nav. on a poor copy of a 1:24,000 USGS. Partners required, so I paired up with Don Davis of Quantico OC.

Other outdoor activity included a short sweep search and a tracking exercise.

Pretty easy day. SAR training class at PWFP. Mostly classroom but some brief outdoor activities involving basic survival skills such as fire starting & shelter building.

trail run with Jeremy. Adena Trace (Wolf Creek section) from Causeway to mile 1.

walking 52:24 [1] 3.1 mi (16:54 / mi)

mix of walking and periodic jogging. Adena Trace trail from mile 1 to mile 2 then return to causeway. Jeremy was not as used to the rocky, leaf covered conditions.

trail running 57:09 [3] 5.0 mi (11:26 / mi)

Adena Trace Trail from Causeway to mile 2.5 and return. My watch almost exactly matched my previous pace count estimates and the half mile markers. There was a variation of a few hundredths between the earlier run with Jeremy and this one, and also between the outbound and returns. But not much. Leaves have mostly fallen so satellite cover should be pretty good. Briefly lost the trail a couple times due to leaf cover.

yard and garden - mostly digging & wheelbarrow. Moved a small tree, put down some grass seed. More like 6 to 7 hours actual total time.

trail running 39:05 [3] 3.6 mi (10:51 / mi)

Glidewell Trail, long loop clockwise. with Jeremy Franklin. I did an extra loop around the ponds while Jeremy took his time climbing the big hill, so that accounts for the extra distance.

Red course at Germantown. 2nd place to Tom Svobodny by about 3 minutes. I lost a few seconds on 13 talking to Katie about her torn fingernail, probably a minute or two trying to bash thru the green leaving 14, and at least a couple minutes looking in the wrong reentrant for 15 (I blew a control in this same spot last year and I am convinced that the map is less than perfect there. Then I blew another minute trying to cut thru woods from 15-16, where the light green turned out to be rather thorny and slow. Ouch!

Walnut Hills HS. Although this was mostly open school grounds, the mapping was a pain because of many changes to the property since the aerial photos, eg new parking lot, removed 2 tennis courts, rebuilt the football field and track, etc.
