orienteering 1:34:59 [4] ** 11.8 km (8:03 / km) +20m 7:59 / km
28c weight:164lbs shoes: Brooks Accel

Long, long "red" course at Joyce Park. Although the wind got pretty strong toward the end, I did manage to stay dry. A few of the later people got wet as rain, sleet and snow moved in.

walking 20:00 [1] * 1.5 km (13:20 / km)
5c

control pickup at Joyce Park. My legs felt like jelly. Counted this just as walking, because no real navigation was involved. I really should only count 3 of the controls as I drove to the other 2, but the 1.5 km does reflect actual walking distance.

bicycling - stationary 30:00 [3] 10.0 mi (3:00 / mi)

did not feel as hard as yesterday. had to use a different bike from normal because the fitness center is really busy in the AM and I had to catch an early afternoon flight. I felt like I was doing about a 9.6 pace, compared to the normal bike.

declining reps, various.

walking 3:00 [1] 0.2 mi (15:00 / mi)

fairly brisk pace, back from fitness room. air temp was pretty chilly for being wet with sweat.

orienteering race 1:13:12 [3] *** 5.3 km (13:49 / km)
15c shoes: Jalas hi-top O' shoes

Tucson - Ironwood. More climb than the previous day, and looking ahead to use the hills and mountains as targets made it easier to stay on a straight line. I still made a major error on one control. And what really peeved me was when I made the exact same error when I went out later to pick up controls. Didn't lose as much time on it then, because I recognized where I was. But I thought I had been really careful on staying on bearing. Figured out later that I turned slightly right to avoid thorny vegetation and didn't correct enough, then turned further right crossing a system of washes with more vegetation, and again did not correct enough back to the left.

This course consisted of 3 loops, visiting a common hub control 3 times. I didn't pay enough attention the first time through the hub and lost at least a minute on it the second time through. I do think that the control circle was slightly off center, though, which contributed since visibility was limited. I passed within about 20 meters of the control, missed it, and had to re-attack from a ramada by the park road. Definitely a case of under-estimating the difficulty on what should have been a very easy control.

This terrain was also rockier in places, and the rougher footing slowed me down on a couple of legs.

orienteering race 22:47 [5] *** 2.5 km (9:07 / km)
14c shoes: Jalas hi-top O' shoes

A sprint through the desert. Fast running in most places, although cactus-dodging was still a requisite skill. A couple bobbles (4 and 12) each cost me around a minute, but no catastrophic mistakes. The angled north lines on the map were annoying (as on the other maps from the weekend). I think that contributed to at least a couple of my mistakes, although I should have been able to deal with it.

orienteering 38:07 [2] *** 2.0 km (19:04 / km)
8c shoes: Jalas hi-top O' shoes

control pickup at Ironwood.
