walking 1:20:00 [2] ** 6.0 km (13:20 / km)

control pickup at Miami Whitewater. I'm counting this as walking rather than orienteering, since I was pretty familair with the locations. But it is an intricate area. and I had to use the map some.

It was interesting to see how the circuitous tracks I made when setting out controls might have drawn some people off. In some places, there were some pretty major groupings of tracks from control to controls, but other places it was amazing that I could get within 20 or so meters of a control before tracks started converging from every point of the compass.

I was really surprised to find one major convergence of tracks on a ridge line 100 meters or so from a control, and not really a good attackpoint, eg not in a saddle or a hilltop, just an intermediate point, but tracks converged from at least four different directions, and the snowy footprints made an interstate along the ridge, in the least logical direction for attacking any control. Hmmm.

setting controls at Miami Whitewater. deep snow, so I intentionally took circuitous routes to many controls. visited all 21 controls to be used for Saturday, set 14 stands and snapped SI units into the 7 stands that I placed yesterday.

Control setting at Miami Whitewater. Deep snow made it pretty physical. Distance approximate. Had to revise the planned start location and courses because the last 1/4 mile of road to the planned start (up a big hill) is closed. The park doesn't like to use salt, and with no sun or above freezing temps expected before the meet on Saturday, they may not get it opened. Now I hope that they do not open it, because I have the re-designed white using the road for a ways. But, even if they open it, its a dead-end with light traffic.

Nursery O' 6 hour mini-rogaine, New Carlisle, Ohio. Bitter cold and northwest winds overwhelmed my gloves and I quit the course early. 10 controls in 1:26:46 had me on a 4.5 hour pace to clear the course, but as I turned back into the wind it became quickly apparent that my gloves were not up to the task. After taking shelter behind a storage shed and warming my fingers for a few minutes, I got one last control at 1:43:15 then headed for the finish. Made it about a kilometer and had to take shelter ina barn for another 5 or 10 minutes to get my fingers thawed out again, then made the final 3 kilometer or so dash back to the finish, ending with an official tiem of 2:29:28, and 560 points, amazingly good enough for 3rd place in the 50 and under age group.
