walking 10:00 [1] * 0.5 km (20:00 / km)

Placing final controls for orienteering meet today.

trail running warm up/down 4:50 [2] 0.8 km (6:02 / km)
shoes: Jalas hi-top O' shoes

Warm-up jog prior to doing course.

orienteering race 35:37 [5] * 3.6 km (9:54 / km)
shoes: Jalas hi-top O' shoes

Ran the green course at Indian Creek. Since I was the course setter & intimately familiar with the map, I listed technical intensity as low... I hardly had to look at the map. Very clean run, with only a couple very minor bobbles.

walking 31:04 [1] * 1.9 km (16:21 / km)
shoes: Jalas hi-top O' shoes

Picking up controls from Indian Creek meet.

walking 1:45:00 [2]

Well, I got out the push mower & did the usual trimming, but also a lot of areas I normally do with the tractor. Mainly, I figured the extra walking would be good exercise. We've had a couple freezing nights, so maybe this will be the final cut of the season. Don't count on it, though.

walking 1:33:57 [1] * 5.5 km (17:05 / km)

Course setting for Indian Creek meet on Sunday. Placed all but 5 controls. I'm calling this "walking" rather than "orienteering" because I'm so familiar with the map & it is not a particularly tough area. Although I carried the master map, I probably could easily have done it all map-memory... but I'm a stickler for double checking that the right control code goes in the right spot. Did a little jogging, but its a bit awkward with an armload of control stands.

trail building / maintenance 46:00 [3]

I once again did battle with invasive honeysuckle bushes & Russian olive. If only we could train the deer to eat this stuff!

orienteering 49:45 [1] *** 2.0 mi (24:52 / mi)

course setting for Indian Creek meet on Sunday. Distance is a rough estimate.

mapping - field checking 2:47:56 [1] *** 5.5 mi (30:32 / mi)

updating Indian Creek map. Distance is a rough estimate.

trail building / maintenance 59:48 [3]

removing honeysuckle bushes.

trail running 32:30 [4] 5.7 km (5:42 / km)

Trails at Indian Creek. Did 2 short interval sprints on relatively flat trail, which ocad measures at 365 meters each. 1:34 and 1:38. (with 3:41 and about 600 - 650 m of trail in between).

bicycling - stationary 31:09 [2]

No opportunity to get in any outdoor training today, but I did get in two sessions on a stationary bike

bicycling - stationary 30:30 [3]

Second session was 2 or 3 hours after the first and I pushed a little harder.

trail running 59:57 [3] 5.0 mi (11:59 / mi)
weight:163lbs

Adena Trace Trail. Pace a little slow in places due to wet, slippery leaves and a few steep spots. Downhill was as slow as up due to the slippery conditions. Didn't hit too many spiderwebs, but the trail could use some routine maintenance.

walking warm up/down 17:35 [1] 0.8 mi (21:59 / mi)

Short & slow cool-down walk on the trail. Kicked some fallen leaves off a wooden footbridge & tossed a few fallen branches off the trail.

walking 1:36:45 [1] 6.0 mi (16:08 / mi)

hiking, 90% on trail with a couple short paved road sections.

Tuesday Oct 10, 2006 #

walking 3:42:06 [1] 16.0 km (13:53 / km)

Hiking, mostly on "single-track" trails, but half a mile or so of brushy off-trail and a quarter mile or so of paved road. Some areas seem to have had very little traffic, so I spent some time tossing larger fallen branches off the trail & trampling a few over-growing nettles & brambles.

orienteering race 1:26:13 [4] *** 7.9 km (10:55 / km)
shoes: Jalas hi-top O' shoes

North American Championships - "Wine - O" course. All adult finishers received a small (185 ml) bottle of wine... a very nice touch. Very interesting area atop the Niagara Escarpment, with a beautiful view of Toronto & Lake Ontario from the high cliffs at the east edge of the map. I didn't have as much time to warm up as I would have liked... just a few minutes of walking & stretching.
