Orienteering race (DVOA Washington Crossing ) 1:35:50 [3] 5.8 mi (16:31 / mi) +177m 15:06 / mi
shoes: Innov-8 Roclite 315

The start of my GPS trace was a warmup. I forgot to save that and then I didn't start the watch until after control 3! I still am having problems seeing the map: the magnifier on my thumb compass had a lot of glare.

This was copied from a partial GPS Trace.
First mistake: control 2. I thought the woods were too thick and started down the trail, but never found the side trail - so I ran back up the trail?? and into the woods.

Control 3: veered to the left on trail and ended up in the yellow field. Didn't see the trail underneath the printed red line.

Control 6: pushed too far to the right and then was on the trail going up the hill. I thought that since I was on a trail I would keep on it for as long as I could.

Control 9: it seemed farther into the brush. The brush was quite high end there was a little rise in the ground level.

Control 10: complete fail! I think this is one of those times that I can't see the detail on the map? I got confused in the fight and light fight. Ended up on some strange trails - and yes I promise to say that my compass always points north 100 times. I should have readjusted compass after passing through fight on trail. Relocated myself when I got to large trail and made sure by running to Tee junction! Then I missed the trail junction I just went down and went to the junction with a hunting blind.

Control 13: used small trail with bend as first attack feature and then paced, but ended up on the trail without seeing the root stock because I was too far North. I am very confused about the yellow "open with scattered trees" marking on the map. To me it seemed like an open forest. Note that the GPS trace has me punching the control in the middle of the "yellow dot area" (See Route Gadget) I think this control was not in the correct place based on GPS and use of yellow dot markings on the map. IOF states: 402 Open land with scattered trees: Meadows with scattered trees or bushes, with grass or similar ground cover offering easy running. OK OK I have a lot to learn in reading a map as you can tell by my route in Route Gadget!
