Orienteering 1:56:38 [3] 7.3 km (15:59 / km) +270m 13:29 / km

Well this was the complete opposite of the orienteering I did last week, to make a complete understatement. It was at Boyce Park, and the vegetation was so thick it was very reminiscent of orienteering in WA, except that on this map the impassible thorns were often mapped as white or light green. Needless to say, I got in a lot of fights with thorn bushes, and I was never the one who came out on top. I feel for the course designer attempting to make an advanced course in terrain where it was nearly impossible to go off-trail because of the dense vegetation. Nearly always trails were the fastest route, even if the trail route was much much longer than straight/off-trail. Because of this, I was pretty conservative in my route choice, but there were a few times where I took a route with a little more off-trail because it was significantly shorter, which was a bad decision every time because I would get stuck in thorns and spend painful minutes trying to extricate myself. I managed to finish the course despite being ready to be done after about control 5 (of 17 controls) but it was far from my best performance. While I didn't make any glaring navigational mistakes, I clearly made some route choice errors, and spent far too much time stuck in thorn bushes. The one upside is that we seemed to have a really good turnout for this event, and I think that most of the easier courses had to deal with far less off-trail and thorniness than I did!

Strength 35:00 [4]

Went to the gym today because I hadn't gone in awhile and was feeling like being very productive after finishing my grading for the week 4 days early. I went to the Pete today, which just confirmed how much more I like Trees, but unfortunately it was too late to go to trees since it closes at 5 on the weekends.

Running 40:00 [3] 5.11 mi (7:50 / mi)

Back to the treadmill because it was, once again, horrifically hot for what is now officially supposed to be fall. The treadmill automatically set my workout time for 40 minutes and wouldn't let me increase it, so I was just like, welp, it looks like I'm running for 40 minutes then. Because I get super bored on the treadmill, of course I couldn't just run steady for 40 minutes straight without wanting to jump out of the 3rd floor window I was staring out of the entire time. Instead, I changed the pace every song, starting at 8:20 pace then 8:00, 7:45, 8:00, 7:30, etc down to 7:15 then back up to 7:45 at which point my 40 minutes were up. I think I'm getting better at running on the treadmill (at least 5 miles twice in a row, woo!) but I still can't wait for the real fall weather to come back so I can run outside again without wanting to die.

Running 41:55 [3] 5.0 mi (8:23 / mi)

The second time this semester I was motivated enough to get up early and run in the morning, and on a Friday too. It was mostly because it's supposed to be hot again today so I knew I wouldn't run at all if I didn't do it in the morning. My legs were a little tired from yesterday, but at least it wasn't too hot yet. Then I got to go to my Friday morning meeting where there were bagels and donuts :)

Running 38:15 [4] 5.0 mi (7:39 / mi)

I hadn't run in a week, and it was very hot outside (where did fall go?), so it naturally seemed like a good idea to go to the air-conditioned gym and kill myself on the treadmill. I did a progressive run starting at 8:30 and increased the pace by 15 seconds/mile every half mile for 4.5 miles, ending with the last half mile at 6:30 pace, then doing a half mile cool down. I felt ok for most of it but the last mile or so was pretty hard. Still, it was a really good workout!
