AR race (Day 4 - Expedition) 23:00:00 [3]
OK. One story for now.
So far in to the race it was a pretty clean event for us. About 10% off our pace though and we were falling further off the lead, but, we internalized and just raced with what we had.
Leaving our last paddle trek point, I'm sure our support told us exactly what to do, but what I heard was "when you leave here just turn left on the Highway and hammer for about 40km". We were aiming for a tight cutoff so it wasn't time to mess around. So, having misplaced the cover of the MTB mapboard I just stuffed the maps in to my teammates' backpack and we hammered. Problem was, it was completely in the wrong direction. Roughly a 90km out and back. In ten years, I'd say that was the furthest I've been off track by far:-). It wasn't so much a navigation mistake as a non-navigation mistake. There was lots of cursing by myself on the return bike ride. Anyway, I continuously had to explain my error to volunteers, other racers, race management, etc... Rumours were going around that "Team Spirit road down the road to go to a bar." or that "Our maps were so destroyed we just guessed." Yeh, ok I stuck tight to the maps after that.
