Orienteering (NA Rogaine Champs) 10:56:00 [3]

With 4 minutes to spare - last year it was 6.

One area where the map details made some controls difficult was in stream identification. As course details noted, there were numerous streams that existed that weren't shown on the map. Also, the streams often had numerous beds. Being aware of this only partly helped. It was particularly difficult when descending in to the feature as you would think you're in the proper stream bed only to come to a stream junction and realize you potentially may have descended past the control if it were located in the other bed. Just something one had to stay on top off, and more often that not, we descended parallel to one another to avoid such mistakes.

Orienteering (NA Rogaine Champs) 13:00:00 [3]

Teamed up with rookie Andrew Cameron for this. Came 5th.

In general, quite a tough, "unpretty" event. No easy points. Everything had to be fought for. The terrain did not vary and one either did out and backs along ridge lines or climbed up and down slopes. Almost always in the forest - no open areas either than the occasional road. So, that being said, we had an O.K. run. Actually missed two points we went after. Was awarded the points for the one control as it was not located where the map said it was. The second was an 80-pointer we relocated and attacked twice from two different locations and couldn't locate. It was indicated as a vegetation boundary - not the most accurate thing to locate off of in full forest to begin with. This was a daytime attack as well, so eventually realized we were only going to locate this through luck, and I had a hard time sticking around to count on that. One shining moment was we spiked everyone one of our nightime controls and got over 600 points in darkness. If only our daytime attacks were as accurate.

I do feel quite beaten up now, and am slow to start my return 4400km drive home...

Note

Went for about an hour hike. Not interested in training right now, just keeping movement in my body. Was a nice day at Wasaga Beach. Came back and mowed the lawn at Hitchon's.

Note

Feeling fine except for just fatigue and itchiness due to surficial cuts and bites healing. Will likely try and get a gentle run in tomorrow and keep the legs moving. Pretty much a week of rest leading up to the Rogaine this weekend.
