Running 1:09:55 [3] 15.03 km (4:39 / km) +223m 4:20 / km

Morning run on country/cottage roads around Westport.

Soon after the 11km mark, I crested a hill into some scrappy semi-open land. Maybe 100-150 metres ahead I could see 2 smaller black bears fiddling around on the side of the road.

Before I could shit myself, I turned around and walked another 100 metres back to the bottom of the hill and out of sight. We definitely didn't make eye contact.

After bolting another km or so, I ended up hitching a ride with a cottager driving back towards Westport. She dropped me off at the main highway and I had one of the most satisfying downhill runs of my life back to town.

Totally spooked.

(...been visualizing my bear attack defense tactics all day.)

Run up the hill from Westport - then hitched in with Duca at the entrance of Mt. Foley.

10 AM

Orienteering 1:01:14 [1] 5.02 km (12:12 / km) +106m 11:02 / km

Corridor training at Mt. Foley.

I'm only going to focus on the positive:

Another solid first third - really smooth, gained some confidence, got a feel for the map, upped the pace, good compass.

Running warm up/down 4:20 [1] 0.74 km (5:51 / km) +42m 4:33 / km

11 AM

Running 15:47 [3] 3.57 km (4:25 / km) +92m 3:55 / km

Back down the hill to Westport.

4 PM

Orienteering 23:39 [1] 2.2 km (10:44 / km) +46m 9:43 / km

Brought some flags from home.

Set a white-ish yellow course for Thanh, Hank, and Annie.

Orienteering 40:00 [1] 2.2 km (18:11 / km) +45m 16:30 / km

First training session for my family!!

Thanh was awesome. We did a little feature walk along the way. She got it. I was impressed, and super happy she enjoyed herself.

The kids were whirlwinds of joy. :)

Annie just went for it. She couldn't wait to get to the flags and negotiated the sketchy rock really well.

Hanky took a couple wicked spills, splashed through everything, and had quite the eye for the orange - unlike his dad.

It was just the best.

Control picking at Mt. Foley.

First third felt great, then a little blip lead me to truncate things a bit.

Had to get back to my patient wife and little ones waiting for me in the rain.

Such a stellar part of the map.
