Orienteering race 1:51:07 [4] *** 4.64 km (23:57 / km) +240m 19:02 / km
shoes: VJ Integrators

Green course at Germantown Metropark West (MVOC).

Note

I barely got to the meet in time to start. I couldn't leave the house until Jen got back from teaching her Sunday school class, so I left the house at 11:37am. Maintained a brisk pace en route, and got to the meet in time to register, change some clothes, and start. I probably started a couple of minutes after 2:00pm.

I initially thought of running red, but thought better of it when I saw the climb figure. I only get to one or two MVOC meets per year, and I always forget how ungodly steep those reentrants are in this area. I brought both the VJs and the Montrails, and opted for the VJs given the climb and what I anticipated would be soft footing. This turned out to be the right choice.

As usual (for me), it took a couple of controls to get into the map. Lots of honeysuckle and mf-rose in the latter portion of the first leg and in the second leg.

Fighting the veg meant that I kept expecting to arrive at the first control sooner than I did (walking southerly along the stream), but thankfully I hit it before I started backtracking.

Generally, though, I was really happy with my nav today. I knew where I was the whole time, and didn't make any parallel errors. I did several sections of mid-slope contouring through multiple reentrant systems, and kept good track along the way, which is sometimes a weak point for me.

I definitely missed not having a separate clue sheet, though. I hate unfolding/refolding my map to check control codes.

It was a good climbing workout, and I'm glad I made the trip. Plus, no ankle turns!! Temperature wasn't bad at all, once I got moving in the woods. Glasses only fogged a couple of times. Felt bad for the MVOC guys standing around in the cold, though. They should have taken turns running laps around the field, I think!

max:177 weight:207lbs shoes: Nike AirMax Tailwind

Walking (treadmill) warm up/down 20:00 [1] 1.17 mi (17:06 / mi)
shoes: Nike AirMax Tailwind

Warm up/cool down.

Note

Woke up with a sore throat today. I hope it isn't a harbinger of things to come. Jen and Joshua have been fighting a cough for what seems like weeks ('cause, well, it *has* been weeks). Urg.

Watching the weekend weather forecasts closely, trying to decide when I want to get into the woods. Saturday will be the nicer day, but I have band practice that night, and mapchecking at Yellowwood the same day would have me out of house for almost the whole day - not a good weekend strategy as far as the family is concerned.

Sunday will be colder with possible rain, so the Pumkin Hunt will be a better choice for this day. It's a farther drive, but since it's a specific course, I'll be able to keep up a more deliberate pace (and keep the core temp higher). I don't know if Belmar is available for either day.

Note

Mike M. has shamed me for my lack of AP logging this year [grin], so I'm going to start logging my piddly treadmill work and weekend meets here again. Hopefully I can crowbar myself out of the rut I've been in lately. I need to drop some weight pretty badly.
