Orienteering race (Get your popcorn for this) 20:01 [4] ***** 4.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Nike Elite 9

Get yourself some popcorn and a cold beverage because I'm about to unload on this course. I fell into almost every single BS trap that this course created so I'm feeling extra ranty today.

Here are the two maps (double sided) to begin with for some context before I start the rant proper.

First of all, on the way to the first control I got caught in the spikiest bush I think I've ever seen. Singlet- 0: Bush - 1.

Most of the bush section was really fun. Apart from the complete lack of grip that I didn't plan for with the shoes that I chose which resulted in almost falling about 5 times on the hill of death (7-8) (I'm pretty sure the rest of the elite field assumed normal flats would be optimal). The only real issue in the bush was that somehow the boulder that #9 was on was mapped way too far to the south. So I just ran straight past it thinking it couldn't possibly be my control. This is Bruce Arthur's GPS (he was lucky enough to check the number first).

Nothing game breaking here, just a little bit annoying and a ~20 second time loss.

(Sorry in advance for poor quality but my camera isnt' working).

Ok so 12-13. I got caught out here twice along with about 70% of the elite field. These bridges are obviously marked incorrectly, this is the issue most people had with the map. There's literally no way of seeing by looking at the map that that isn't just a walkway with fences on either side. In reality it's a raised walkway 3m up in the air. On the way to 13 I got caught out by this twice. Both times forcing me to take long routes around olive green to eventually get to the control. If you had the intestinal fortitude and the technique to back it up you could completely LEGALLY jump from control 13 up 3m in the air down onto the walkway below. Don't think anyone tried that route choice.

Now comes where I lost another huge chunk of time. On the way from 23 to 24 I planned to run around the right of the building using the undercover section. I found out after running to the end of the undercover section that that thin black line was actually the end of the area and I couldn't go any further unless I wanted to break the glass and then walk inside (which I think was legal according to the map?) and then jump down from inside. I think I'm the only person that tried to run on that undercover area so I was the only one I know who lost time there. Then on the entry to 24 there's no real way you can see that the staircase that the control is on isn't accessible from the western side there because the stairs are drawn so badly that they look like impassible walls. That forced me to go all the way around the olive green.

Side rant - it's almost impossible to see whether 25 is up at the top of the stairs or the bottom (the description helpfully says "end of path". The control is basically on top of the line.

Just really annoyed about this because I'm really trying to focus on sprint and then I get my ass kicked because of a map which is not up to scratch. If this was a club or even state league event I wouldn't mind. But I paid $40+ to run on this map so I at least expect someone to go around the map and have a look and see if it's correct. And for the love of Dog if you're making a sprint map please think about clarity before you go and map every... single.... stair in a stair case. They end up looking like impassible walls...

End rant.

Running intervals (Deek's Quarters) 16:17 [3] 4.8 km (3:24 / km)
shoes: Nike Streak 6 (Flymesh Upper)

Finally got to doing this workout which I've been wanting to have a crack at for a while. It's 8 x 400m @ a little bit below 5k pace with a float which is supposed to be around 40seconds/km slower than the effort pace.

A bit hard to execute but this workout is so much harder than it seems. I started out doing 74s knowing it would be hard and then I just couldn't get any faster than that. Just holding on at the end. Ended up running 4800m in 16:17 which means by the end I'd actually run at a pretty fast average speed. I think these might have to become a weekly fixture.

Running warm up/down 36:00 [2] 6.6 km (5:27 / km)
shoes: Nike Streak 6 (Flymesh Upper)

Note

taper week. No more workouts till Wagga, just junk miles.
