Orienteering race (Broken Orienteer Slopes) 1:09:06 [4] 8.54 km (8:05 / km) +220m 7:10 / km
shoes: Salomon Fel-Cross 3 July

I thought I could make it around Newie terrain without losing huge chunks of time. I was wrong. Absolute howler of a run. The terrain was really scratchy and low visability which made compass really important. Just really struggled out there in all aspects.

Orienteering (Hard Short Backwards) 33:31 [3] 3.5 km (9:35 / km) +72m 8:41 / km
shoes: Salomon Fel-Cross 3 July

Still had a few hiccups even at a lower intensity. In my defense some of the controls were almost impossible to do backwards.

Orienteering (Control Collecting) 48:32 [2] 5.02 km (9:40 / km)
shoes: Salomon Fel-Cross 3 July

Collecting controls. Got a pretty big loops. Arms were dead at the end. These shoes and O-pants are definitely dead. The end of a big day in the forest.

Running tempo 1:05:59 [4] 15.57 km (4:14 / km)
shoes: Nike Elite 9

20 mins @ 3:29/km, 4 mins rest, then 10 mins @ 3:26/km. Ouch.

Running 54:51 [3] 12.28 km (4:28 / km) +150m 4:13 / km
shoes: Saucony Kinvara 8

These Kinvaras are definitely a half size too small. My right big toe does not enjoy the ride, but it's alright for shorter runs.

Anyway. Got home yesterday after NZ. I've done a looot of thinking after every race about how I'm progressing and what I should focus on. My best results by far were a MP in the oceania sprint (where I just ran past my control 21 without punching and ended up about 1:20 down on the winner) and the middle earth sprint where I was only a minute down on the winner.

I enjoy bush orienteering immensely but at the moment it still feels in most terrain like I am on the edge of chaos all the time trying desperately to not make a mistake and I can seldom open up physically because I am lacking the ability to read the map properly in a lot of terrains.

So it seems my best shot of reaching an Aus team standard is to focus on sprint orienteering. This presents a few advantages:
1. I'm only a little bit behind in this discipline instead of WAAAY behind in forest O
2. I have the facilities to train for sprint O close at hand. (Good campuses nearby in Newie and Sydney as well as the local athletics track (which they are just about done resurfacing) and lots of paved surfaces.

I still want to run well as a forest orienteer, I just think that my training focus should be on sprint orienteering, and forest orienteering can come along for the ride.

I've been thinking about making a little training group of Sydney/Newie based athletes to do sprintervals with every now and then, rather than doing it all by myself and having to set my own courses (which kinda defeats some of the point).

End of diatribe. I didn't upload my NZ runs cause it was depressing and I didn't have internet sometimes.
