Anza Borrego Classic. I had a really good, even great run, massively better than the Goat physically and technically. Just a couple hesitations/bobbles, which were all corrected quickly. On 3, I was one hill/ridge to the right; on 14, I came into the reentrant a bit high (though it was also posited that the control may have been a bit too low); on 18, I was also a bit high but corrected after seeing the trail at the top of the ridge. I was pleased to be <1min behind AJ's winning time (though Joe would have improved that by 2-3 minutes had he not forgot to punch at a water control).

I much prefer the flatter, faster, subtler parts of AB to the steeper, slower parts, where you can stretch your legs out and feel like you're moving well instead of dealing with almost countless steep hillsides of slippery rocks.

The famous slot canyon maze-o. I managed to find all 10 controls with some minutes to spare, so that's a win - and I only got into one precarious spot, where I climbed halfway down a cliff and had to turn around and go back up because it was too scary.

Anza Borregoat! This didn't go too well; in the excitement of the mass start I probably went out too hard in an ill-advised attempt to keep up with the other guys, and was struggling physically by the middle of the course. I made a dumb route choice decision to stay high out of 3, which put me perhaps as much as a minute behind the leaders - a margin I had little to no chance of making up. This put me just behind Andy and ahead of Erin; I got back ahead of Andy by 9, but it was only after reaching 11 that I realized it had been the glaringly obvious control to skip...oops.

I decided 16 was the only worthwhile skip remaining, and continued to the 12-13-14-15 trail running section, which felt much more arduous than it should have due to the sandy footing. To my surprise, Joe appeared in the distance ahead of me on the way to 13; it turned out that he had also not skipped 11 (the only other one of the front group not to) and then decided to skip *12*, a hilariously poor decision which led to him replacing a lot of trail running with steep, unstable side-hilling, and probably ADDED time if anything. Anyway, I jumped slightly ahead of him with my skip, but he caught up again at 18 and cruised ahead into the finish; I followed for a disappointing sixth place.
