Nationals long @ Red Rock Canyon SP. Ouch, not a good run. I had a lot of trouble finding flags in the circle at 3, 5, 6, and 15, and made a big mistake at 9 where I went down a canyon for a while in a totally wrong direction. On the positive side, I felt good, won a few splits, and could have been within shouting distance of Joe without the big 5min+ error and some of the smaller ones. I ran down the finish chute at the same time as my dad, which was fun. The wind was whipping down the canyon from the north such that when I was heading that way I seemed to be hardly moving, while heading back south I felt like I was flying. The scenery was spectacular, as desert orienteering usually is, if lacking the expansive views of Anza-Borrego or the Columbia River Gorge maps.

Nationals middle @ Vasquez Rocks. Really cool and scenic area, both for orienteering and in general. Lots of rock (naturally) in all shapes and sizes, which reminded me of some of the more complex parts of Anza-Borrego. I goofed up 4, which was in a complicated and rugged area; I wasn't sure how to approach so I got spooked and bailed down to the creek bed and ended up circling past and around it and coming back in from behind. Other than that, things went really well and I was very happy with the race overall. Joe absolutely smashed it in super impressive fashion.

Nationals sprint @ Pierce College. Okay run; my legs felt a bit heavy from the early travel morning. It took me a weirdly long amount of time to get myself situated and map oriented out of the start. I didn't love the weird direction to 1 or the fact that the first two controls were the trickiest ones of the course; seemed a bit too "gotcha." Fair enough though, and it was a fun course regardless. Loving the warmth and sun.

Running warm up/down 12:53 intensity: (25 @1) + (8:17 @2) + (3:41 @3) + (30 @4) 0.9 mi (14:19 / mi) +32m 12:54 / mi
