Winter League 7/Winter League Champs @ Camp River Ranch. Fun, physical course with lots of tough off-trail running and some snow on the ground. Felt like I was getting my ass kicked, but mainly this was just one of those TMT-esque races where that's gonna be the case for everyone so you don't worry about it. Still, I definitely made some silly mistakes, especially early on (2 and 3). I also almost skipped the spectator control (15) entirely, and in general I'd characterize my compass work as "grotesque."

Ye olde BT loope. Still decent snow on the ground some places. I took a wrong turn at one point, weird.

Easy post-Sprint Camp yog. An excellent weekend, good to see everyone as always. Competitively speaking, among such a strong field I was very pleasantly surprised to snag the last money spot - and even come very close to fourth - and win some fun pink Monopoly Canadian money. More to the point, I was victorious in the all-important American, Cascade, and Non-FWOC/Non-Graeme Divisions.

Other takeaways - very impressed by Siri's fantastic results, putting up a serious challenge for Ali's #1 spot. She's about to crush JWOC this year. Also impressed by Dusty's results; he's a 32min 10k guy so he's got speed to spare, but now he's also picking up sprint orienteering quickly and seems pretty keen so could be a force soon.

Kensington Park. Another solid race, paired with David Bakker. Made a 10s mistake in the second set of butterflies when I left 18 and went to 20 instead of 19. Just a directional error leaving the control, compounded by the fact that I immediately saw 20 from 18 and assumed it was the correct flag next to some bushes.

BCIT Setup. A clean race! Came fourth, though with several guys right behind me and no one close in front this put me in the rabbit position for the Chase.

BCIT Chase. With no forking, a somewhat route-choicey first control and fastbois nicely spaced behind me at 6s, 12s, 17s, and 20s, got caught almost immediately and was soon uncomfortably leading a thundering herd of four or five guys. Eventually got passed in the latter stages by Michael Svoboda, Dusty, and Ian Collings. Interestingly, at this point Michael and I were basically racing head-to-head for fourth place overall (though didn't know it). In the end he had a bit more left and got me by 18s in this race and 7 points overall, which equates to some seven or eight seconds over about an hour of sprinting.
