Day 2

As expected, a big change of pace from Saturday - lots more rock, in both vertical and horizontal form, and route choices. I had a considerably worse race physically and navigationally (I'm noticing a pattern of me never being able to orienteer worth a damn for BOTH days of a two-day non-sprint event: TT - great/terrible, BC Champs - great/bad; US Classic Champs - terrible/good; this event - good/bad).

Took a poor route to 2 and got stuck in some rock fields, so lost 2-3 minutes there, then Adam sighted me on the way to 3 and I led him into it, then he was on my heels heading to 4, which stressed me out enough that I mixed up my cliff lines and sent us on a goose chase/river viewing tour all the way to the immediate vicinity of 6. I eventually figured out I was on the big trail and made my way back, but Adam was so screwed up he thought we were below 4, and was last seen heading up the hill towards 7, and apparently ended up wandering around near 8 for a while before finally coming back down another 10 minutes later.

Seems like when you lose 7 minutes on a control, but your adversary loses 17 minutes, that's the orienteering version of a Pyrrhic victory. I didn't have too much invested in the race after that debacle, but did throw in some solid legs here and there - 6, 9, 14, 16, 19. Great course, awesome venue.

Trying not to be grumpy with myself and everything about not being fit right now, but it is hard. On the plus side, knee continues to improve slowly. At this rate, maybe I'll be able to start training in a couple weeks - right after US Champs. Cool.

Desert Run, Day 1. RG

A fast course in the extreme, with nearly unlimited visibility and runnability. Fairly simple navigation, with lots of large rock features - though there were some trickier bits nearer the end. I felt good early on but started to feel the lack of recent training on the gradual climb up to 13, and lost considerable time on speed in the 12-13-14-15 section, before recovering a bit later on. I didn't make any proper nav errors though, so managed third, five (!) min behind J and three behind Eric.

As this event has been dubbed the unofficial 2016 Cascade/Greater Vancouver cup, here are the standings after Day 1 (using the simple XC system with top five scoring points, lower score better):

Cascade 1, 2, 3, 8, 9 = 23 points (Harvey Bone Enger Nachev Nuss)
GVOC 4, 5, 6, 7, 10 = 32 points (Woods Saari Barrett Rennie Smith)

Can the Canucks muster a comeback!?!?
