Adventure Race race 29:08:00 [3]
USARA Champs as the Midwest team w/Aaron and Chuck. For roster purposes, I couldn't race for the main team because I'm not a captain. That being said, Chuck had been hurt/sick most of the season, so our game plan for the race was to go out at a reasonable pace and enjoy the race. I'd raced a ton this year already and beaten myself down pretty well. The competition was stacked, with most teams fielding their best 3 athletes and coming into the race fresh. All in all, we had a good experience on a hot, humid, and painful course. We ended up dropping CP15 after getting turned around between the original trail and the reroute. We knew at that point with the pace we were moving on foot that we would not clear the course anyway.
All 3 of us ended up with trench foot, blisters, and terrible chafing. Probably a combo of the paddle, rain, and humidity. I have been wearing my team kit all year for training and sprint races, but I hadn't worn it for a 24+ hr. I regret that :) I will never race in them again. As far as the feet are concerned, ever since Sea2Sea, they haven't been the same. From now on, I need to pretape my problem toes. Also, I've been using Bag Balm prerace, but it's not getting the job done anymore. Switching to Sportslick for future races. Ruined feet made for slow going on the treks. For the final trek, we burned an hour looking for FF. Ended up skipping it and grabbing AA and BB before returning to the finish. Finished with 31 of 36 CPs in 22nd (or 23rd?) place.
Looking into next season, I'd like to do at least 2 expeditions and do some more races with all female teams, mixed in with the usual races where we really push the pace. I got burnt out a bit this yr, with the high volume of racing and added stress from big changes in my life. I'm hoping to move to VA in the next yr or so, and with that will come a job change and probably a temporary break from racing. It will definitely be worth it in the end though. Here's to a couple wks off!
