Day 2 of DVOA's "Back to the Woods" event.

1. Left the path at the boulder after the charcoal terrace on the path (conveniently labeled with signage by the parks department).
2. Straight on bearing using pace count checking off terraces. Did not see the indistinct path. Did see the pair of boulders just below.
3. Roughly SE to second path. Spotted rock pile. Left path at terrace on left and went straight.
4. To trail straight ahead and then followed trail to just downhill of control. Flag was hidden in the back of the terrace but the terrace was obvious.
5. Trail around to second terrace by trail. Compass from there. Had trouble discerning the boulders but got to control efficiently enough.
6. Got a little off line to the right but ended up at the trail corner. Compass from there. Was going a little slowly down the hill.
7. Pretty much straight to the second trail and then the trail network to the right coming up past the buildings. Attack was bad - drawn off by another runner - ended up to the right and had to come back uphill.
8. Quick! Could see the control from #7. (Only beat Charlie on this leg because he fell down.)
9. Just rough running to the big building and then past. A little confused because the control was hidden by the picnic shelter.

The run felt good. It was nice to go fast on the trails here and there. Charlie beat me by 9 minutes so he ended up 1st for the two days. I was 2nd and happy with it.

A jog on trails to warm up. It was warm so not much needed.

Orienteering race 1:15:30 intensity: (1 @0) + (1:26 @1) + (20:09 @2) + (39:07 @3) + (14:19 @4) + (28 @5) ***** 3.37 mi (22:24 / mi) +132m 19:59 / mi

note: Started watch a minute late. ET here has been corrected.

First time orienteering in a long time so took it slow and easy, not that it would have possible to go very fast in this terrain.
1. Quick run down the path which was rocky too. Oddly easy control for Brown.
2. Stayed on path to westmost bend by the terrace and depression. Bearing from there took me past the rootstock into the control.
3. Seemed to take forever to get to trail. I got pushed off to the left. The stony ground was very slow. Ended up on the trail just before it makes the big gentle bend. Easy from there straight up the hill.
4. Bearing and pace count noting point features along the way, especially the three rocks together. I had a much easier time spotting the charcoal terraces than the last time I was here.
5. Big mistake of the day here. Went straight and thought I was checking off all the features along the way but couldn't close the deal at the end. Finally circled around and found the terrace on the nose W of control.
6. Bearing, pace count, and contouring.
7. Wimped out and took trail around to SW of control. Yes, I saw the climb.
8. Straight. Thought I knew where I was on the dry ditch but ended up quite high of the control. Saved by the excellent visibility.
9. Bearing and pace count again.
10. Stayed on the purple line. Saw the rock just before the trail. Hill to the left was obvious.
11. Straight.
12. Straight but not confidently. Had to duck under / climb over a tape.

Pretty happy with the run but the time seemed long (due to all the walking). Ended up 5 seconds in front of Bob and 10 seconds in front of Charlie. Not sure how others did.

Fell only once on soft ground.
