Orienteering 44:04 [2] 1.76 mi (25:03 / mi) +100m 21:17 / mi

Waking up a bunch of Day 2 controls. Just a bit after dawn, so I decided not to bring the headlamp along. It was still darkish in the woods, so needed to select open spots for reading the map detail. Since I had 14 controls over 2 km, this was an exercise in control picking. I found that exact compass and pace counting got me to most of the controls. I did however try to read as much detail as I could, since I did not want to take risks of getting lost. I found all of them without problems.

One e-punch unit, upon waking it, did not want to stop beeping. The continuous beep was loud - the "torturous control". I buried it deep into my fanny pack and replaced it with the spare. I had been wondering for several years now when the first time would be to actually encounter a faulty unit. There we go!
2 PM

Orienteering 1:27:06 [2] 3.28 mi (26:33 / mi) +150m 23:15 / mi
shoes: New Balance MT 910 sz 9

Collecting controls. This time the NW loop around the lake and back. I had my Garmin turned on. I stopped the timer while packing in the controls. But then occasionally I forgot to do that, or once I forgot to turn it back on. The time listed is more or less the traveling time.
It turned out to be a very warm day with temps in the low 70's. I had 2 water stops to pack in, so I drank plenty!

I expected to have to go out for more, but apparently all controls were accounted for since we had plenty of help for the collection. So it was time to sit back, have a drink (to share with the yellow jackets), and relax with a happy crew of event workers.

Another successful BD! No major hickups, no injuries, and the weather was superb in spite of a slightly iffy forecast.
The only downside was the light turnout. We could have without incurring much more work accommodated 300+ orienteers - well perhaps a couple of extra helpers for parking, road crossing, and snack provision would have been needed.

As Lex said: Now we can wind down for another 2 years. Yes, but where will the next one be?

Orienteering 44:04 [3] 1.76 mi (25:03 / mi) +100m 21:17 / mi
shoes: New Balance MT 910 sz 9

Waking up 14 of the Day 2 controls. Just a bit after dawn. I did not bring my headlamp - a bit dark in the woods, so I needed to stop at lighter spots to be able to read all the detail.
An exercise in control picking, since I had 14 controls over ~ 2 km. I found that exact compass and pace counting did get me to most of the controls, although I did try to read the details along the way. I had no navigational problems. Nice to orienteer for a change with actual controls to encounter. All I have been doing in the last month + is hanging streamers and chasing streamers....
3 PM

Orienteering 2:00:00 [2] 4.5 mi (26:40 / mi) +120m 24:38 / mi
shoes: New Balance MT 910 sz 9

Collecting a bunch of the Day-1 controls. Ran repeatedly into Steve who was collecting the water controls.
I found my Klean-Kantine small thermos bottle that I had lost about 7 weeks ago while streamering. An orienteer must have found it and carried it to the nearest yellow control which was on my collection list. Thanks thanks thanks, to you, mystery person - I love my KleanKantine !!

Then after returning, I went back to double check the 127 control that I had collected inadvertently, and J.J. had to go out and replace it. We just wanted to be sure of its correct location. And indeed it was hung exactly where it needed to be.
5 PM

Orienteering 1:30:00 [2] 3.5 mi (25:43 / mi) +130m 23:03 / mi
shoes: New Balance MT 910 sz 9

Then another round of placing Day 2 White/Yellow controls. This was a rather long loop, and I ended up at the bottom of the Boston Lake. Then ran all the way in on the trails over the water-tower area with a lot of climb. Again, nice to get a run in to top off a busy and long day.
My run back was in near-darkness but managed to not have to use my headlamp which I had brought along.

Cycling - Bianci Mt Bike (O-ing placing controls) 3:30:00 [2] 8.0 mi (26:15 / mi) +150m 24:48 / mi
shoes: New Balance MT 910 sz 9

Placing controls for the Boulder Dash. I offered to do the far-away controls in the SW part ( The "grand tour"). I decided to use the bike to cover the distance, but that was a bad decision. Better would have been to bike in about a mile, leave the bike and do the rest on foot. So it was slow going since I lacked the essential skills to stay on the bike over the many rocky sections - also my bike is old with a loose seat, and no shock absorbers. Had the control stands in a "sleeve" (picnic chair bag), that was poorly balanced, and I razed an occasional bush or sapling down with it.
Distances and time all estimated, as I wanted to save the battery on my Garmin - far from plug-in opportunities while camping...
5 PM

Orienteering 1:30:00 [2] 3.0 mi (30:00 / mi) +70m 27:58 / mi
shoes: New Balance MT 910 sz 9

Then back out to place the White Course. Returning back in the dark. Was happy to get some running in for the last mile load-free. Was really tired of slowly stomping around.
