Green (10 Controls, 5.7 km, 215 m)

Actual Distance Traveled: 8.9 km
Actual Climb: 390 m

The weather was crisp at Hemlock Overlook. It was cool but sunny. I've been to this park plenty of times before but this was the first time I can recall the registration area being set up near the soccer fields. I don't think I was even aware of the soccer fields.

There was a long walk to the start, 700 m if I recall correctly. There was still plenty of ice. I think the temperature was above freezing when I got started but it had been in the 20s overnight.

I didn't have too much trouble finding most of the controls. I found the first control and started for the 7th one next. It was on the way to the 2nd one but it wasn't until I was getting close to 7/109 that I realized it wasn't the next control I needed to punch.

The 2/106 and 3/107 weren't difficult to find. I decided what I thought would be a safe route from 3/107 to 4/115, an indirect route. I took the trail along the river until I got to the stream that passed near 4/115. It didn't occur to me that the trial would be just as icy as some of the slopes. I had to walk very slowly and carefully through one section that was right along the river. The trail was rocky and there was lots of ice. One misstep and I could have slipped and fallen into the river.

I found 4/115 without any trouble once I left the trail. I overshot 5/122 by a little bit but something felt wrong so I turned around and found it within a minute or two. 6/114 wasn't hard to find but 7/109 gave me some trouble. I took the trail part of the way. I left the trail at the wrong place.

I thought I was at a different bend in the trail when I started to head southeast, away from the trail. I wandered around for a little while. I found 113, which was not on the green course. I guessed as to where it was on the map and used that information to plot my course from there. My guess turned out to be correct and I found 7/109 soon after that.

I didn't take the most direct route to 8/119 but I found it without too much trouble. The last two controls on the course were also not terribly difficult to locate.

Maybe I should have attempted a more direct route from 3/107 to 4/115. It probably would have saved me some time. On the whole I am fairly pleased with how I did even if I did lose a bit of time finding 4/115 and 7/109.
