Seneca Creek
Bumble Brown (12 controls, 4.9 km, 75 m)

The "brown" course I chose to do was a little longer and probably had more elevation gain than the one that the course setter imagined that most people would do if they chose the shortest, fastest brown course.

The windows that I did are as follows in this order:

W1: C-D-E-A-B
W2: Q-R-T-S-P

By my measurement that course is 7.1 km long. I don't have any easy way to calculate the climb.

Actual Distance Traveled: 11.0 km
Actual Climb: 250 m

I started my day at Seneca Creek helping out with Beginner instruction. We were expecting some boy scouts. They showed up just about the time that the briefing for the mass start for the bumble was kicking off. I stayed at my post and finished get the boy scouts off and on their way. I came back ready to start but there was a father and son who needed some help so I helped them before I got my map and took off. By the time I got to the start, which was a short walk (550 m) from the registration area, it was about 12:30.

I signed up to do the brown course which meant doing two of the five windows. Originally I wanted to try and do two most distant windows. That proved to be unfeasible for me because I was too slow to get to both of them and get back by 3 PM. Even if I had been able to take part in the mass start at 12 PM I wouldn't have had enough time to follow through with that plan.

There were just two mandatory controls, the first and last ones. The first control (101) was easy to find. I headed for the west most window (A-E) after finding 101. It took me about 22 minutes to get to C which was almost 1.2 km from 101. The other four controls in that window weren't too difficult to find. It took me about 35 minutes to find the other 4 controls in that window.

I followed the river most of the way from 101 to B. I more or less doubled back along that route and then kept going. My plan was to head for the east most window (U-Y) but by the time I got to where the road and river converged I realized that was totally unfeasible. I decided to do the 4th window instead (P-T).

It took me 49 minutes to get from B to Q. It was almost 2:30 by then. It took me about 33 minutes to find all the controls in that window. The only one that gave me a little trouble was S and that was my fault. I didn't look at the map carefully enough so I wasn't looking for the right sort of terrain feature. I turned right when I should have turned left and started to head in the wrong direction, once I got close to S. Once I realized my mistake I found S without too much trouble.

I headed from P to 127 hoping that it hadn't been pulled yet. I got there just after 3 PM and just ahead of the person who had been sent there to pull it.

I'm happy enough with my results. I could have done a shorted version of the brown course or done the green course and probably covered about the same amount of ground.

It was cold today and windy. I don't think the temperature got above the mid-30s and the wind, when it was blowing, made it feel much colder.

The last time that leap day fell on a weekend was 2004. I was not a member of QOC at that time. Leap Day 2004 was over a year-and-a-half before my first orienteering meet in Dec 2005. The next Leap Day to fall on a weekend won't be until 2032.
