Walking 15:00 [1] 1.41 mi (10:38 / mi)

Orienteering race 1:54:05 [5] 7.0 km (16:18 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

The always challenging Diamond Oaks Map which was very well attended by several JR ROTC high schools. I ran the green course was moving along okay until the leg from 8 to 9. My plan was to run along Harrison and cut up Eaglesnest Drive. When I got to Eaglesnest it was marked private road no trespassing! Here's where my brain cramp started I continued along Harrison turning into the mall. All along pretending this was the subdivision on my map. I could not get the buildings to match up so I ended up going up the creek behind the mall. This is the same creek flowing down from control 11 - it's just off the map. I came up from here into the subdivision all confused. I decided I needed to go south and reorient. I got onto the trail on the west side of the creek and went down to the marsh and clearing. There I did the first pace count of my life to find the control. I ended up pace counting again from the man made object down to control 10 in the pit. Any way a lot of challenges for me. I need to settle in on the compass next. Pace counting is here to stay for me.

Walking 29:00 [2] 2.82 km (10:17 / km)

Walking 2 [3] 0.2 km (10 / km)

I did a few pace counts in my yard. Used Google earth marked off a 50 m line. Took pace counts walking and running. I am going to make myself learn this and use it. I have also moved around on the map using terrain association. Most maps when I look at them I see a 3D picture. I then move around keeping map contact by terrain association. I use a compass a little just to make sure I don't go 180 in the wrong way at trail junctions etc, but don't really pull bearings etc. This has worked well for me on most maps, but have really gotten lost on the OCIN East fork map where there are few contours when you get away from the lake. I'm going to start talking to others about the bearing side and compasses. Mine is on it's last legs.

Mapping 20:06 [2] 1.17 km (17:11 / km)

After our training meet, I had an idea for another kind of training meet. So I mapped a small local park within walking distance of my house. I finished the map for the park and will check out my idea.
