Dan and I headed out on separate maps for training at Harriman. I'd have liked some more time there. We agreed on two hours total, so I walked/warmed up for 15 minutes en route to the start, then used 1/2 my time heading out, and the rest picking up as many controls as I could on the way back. It was quite rocky so I didn't run much, and took my time trying to match features on the map with the ground. I had trouble finding one control, then apparently got way lost looking for another. Ended up stumbling upon it (I think, it matched the feature anyway) on my way back to the car, picked up a few more. Need to figure out what to do with a shoe bending at a location that bugs my foot...

orienteering race (NAOC sprint GreenX) 40:00 [4]
shoes: INOV8 OROC 340

Oh, an impressive performance!!! I spent 17 extra minutes looking for the fourth? control. finally bailed out by heading toward the speaker at the arena. Happened upon my control 12 on the way back, so relocated from there and found it. Very frustrating. I was quite happy with all the other legs. Without that grave error, I would have done pretty well. I think the mistake was from trying to simplify the leg and not checking out every little feature. I guess I should stick with paying attention to the details some more -- or at least where there's potential to get really lost. Also, counting paces and bailing out sooner.

Pleased with my performance on this long race. Fairly bad between 1 and 2, and lost 10 minutes finding #3.

Actual time was 1:47:??. Hideous.
Three major errors, including one out of 1/2 ignorance....
Generally had fun. I need to figure out the right amount of detail to pay attention to in the woods...
If I subtracted out my three major errors, I would have been quite near the tail end but much more satisified. Two errors probably resulted from lack of concentration, partly due to subtraction. The really dumb one was from not understanding where the finish actually was.
I went a little way out of my way to check some control numbers. I should avoid that if I know where I am and it's not where my control should be. If it might be one of my later controls and I'm not sure about my location, it would be a good idea to check it.
One lesson
