Well that didn't work out as planned! Doing a recce for a Life Cycle Offroad practice ride in late July and, apart from nav error near Pickering Brook, all was well until the 34km mark. I was cruising down the nicest track of the course through a puddle and into an angled length of timber hidden in the muddy water. A rapid change of direction and over-correction and the bike's in the ditch beside the track and I'm back on the track, having landed heavily on my left shoulder. Managed to walk myself and bike back to the car and phone signal, called up the support crew and spent the next 24+ hours working my way through Armadale and Royal Perth Hospitals (the State Trauma Centre no less).
Whatever you say about our health system - they're thorough! Multiple scans, tests and examinations later, they've convinced themselves that I've only got a broken collarbone and a couple of cracked ribs and that they should all mend without surgery. Phew. Took a lot of convincing it seemed that a 71 yo coming off an MTB hadn't done a lot more damage - you could see "silly old bugger" written on many of their faces but, in fairness, there was also acknowledgement that I was still out and about exercising.
Loaded up with several slings and boxes of painkillers and sent home late afternoon Friday. I assured them that I would be well managed at home :-)
Looks like the end of MTB action for me for some weeks.
