Strength (Mountain bike) 1:35:00 [3] 26.0 km (3:39 / km)

Competed in the three person coed 8-hour race with Squirt and a reserve call-up Matt. Started the race with a good bike section. The dust and loose rock were indicative of the extremely dry conditions this year. Although we were stuck mid-pack through the technical sections, we were able to push harder on the gravel/paved roads using the tow. No mechanical failures this year, so that was a relief.

Strength (Trek/Paddle) 6:05:00 [3]

While the second part of the race did not go as smoothly as the first (described below) we still did remarkably well. We attempted a couple of the eastern checkpoints after transition, however, encountered significant undergrowth and limited visibility in the bushwhack. Ended up ditching the south-eastern route and headed back to the TA for a paddle north - all in we wasted about 40 minutes there. After picking up the floating CP and the marsh CP close to the northern beach we ran up to the north-eastern loop and picked off each CP there quite easily. Quarter way through the north-eastern route was when Matt started feeling the affects of heat stroke or heat exhaustion. While he couldn't keep any liquids/food down, he battled on. Intermittent jogging and walking helped us keep an ok pace.

Next we headed back west to pick up the north-western CPs. Dropped CP70 as we needed to get back to HUB for the mandatory check-in. Followed up by grabbing a few more CPs close to the HUB including the swim, tube, dam (which was quite dangerous!), lonnie (we were close but didn't hit the target), and marsh.

All in a great day - we finished 3rd in our category with 1300 points! A nice prize for the sufferfest handed to Squirt and Matt. I felt particularly strong throughout the day and am more confident with my conditioning for upcoming Wilderness Traverse.

It was nice to see a number of familiar faces at the race and chat about strategies. As usual, STORM hosted a superb race with great atmosphere and precision organization.

Note

I really need to do a better job of unpacking after an adventure race. Just found my eye glasses which were packed as back-up from the FAC in May. Wonder what other goodies I'll find in my AR drawer!

Biking (Road) 50:00 [3] 18.0 km (21.6 kph)

Quick ride around DV, not too hard.

Packing some stuff for RockstAR tonight and I found $20 bucks stashed in the matches water-tight container. Sweet!
