Talked to Ali about resting heart rate, and she said it was a really useful tool for her. Since I've had trouble knowing when I can step up my training, I figured I'd at least record it for a few weeks and see if there are any changes. In high school and college my resting heart rate stayed between 48 and 55, but I think it's reasonable to assume i might need a new baseline after 17 weeks of relative inactivity. So this week I'll relax and take my heart rate, and while I'm visiting St. Louis I'll try increasing my running a little.

Walked. One large mistake on 9. I got unfocused and made a 90 degree error. Generally I was pretty good at using my compass, but I got tricked into thinking the hills were so distinct I couldn't mess up. More details later!

So many exciting things have been happening I haven't had time to log!

Today: caught the Italy-mobile to Fox Forest. Tried to sleep on the way there but got the harder-to-sleep seat. Slept on the way back.

Despite my slowness, the course was a confidence-builder. Not many mistakes. There were hesitations, but I kept in close contact even where boulders were the only feature. I made a parallel error near the end but I don't think it cost me very much time.

1. Lost 20 seconds looking at my map because the cliff I was using to lead me into the control was farther left than I expected it to be.
2. Slow up the hill. Deadfall, and it was also very thick.
3. Lost 10 seconds being confused because a trail junction didn't look how I pictured it. Went the right way but then spent the rest of the way on the trail double-checking myself instead of planning my exit from 3.
Lost 20 seconds planning my route to 4 (straight).
4. Slow and careful, because it was relatively featureless with a bunch of boulders everywhere. Lost 15-20s because I just remembered seeing one linear feature on the map instead of 2 parallel trails and a rock wall. Stopped after the first trail when I didn't see the boulder that was supposed to be after the second trail.
5. Constantly moving my magnifier out of the way of the map. The water droplets on it meant I couldn't really see through it, and I need to tighten the screw.
6. Lost 5-10 seconds at the top of the hill bc I stopped and hesitated.
Lost 10 seconds when I saw a huge boulder that wasn't on the map. It was covered up by the control circle.
7. Lost time being stuck in green that had grown farther than mapped. Lost 10 seconds making sure I was by the correct boulder. Andrew ran below, out of the green (made me want to check I was by lower boulder and not upper one).
Finish. Lost maybe 25 seconds because I hadn't planned a detail of my route beforehand (run around on the trail or cut across the possibly green hill).
Lost 5-10 seconds looking at my map on a parallel error that might have been a better choice than my route.

I should log Thursday's sprint soon. It'll have more interesting mistakes.

Tricky and detailed, but really good training! Loved the pressure of running in a pack. My one embarrassing mistake was a 180 out of the control, but I recovered relatively quickly. More details to come. Hopefully.

orienteering (Line-O) 43:00 [3]
shoes: O' Shoes

Yayyy went running at Hammond Pond! I took the T to Newton Center, which I had to do anyway to get my running shoes and shampoo out of my car.

Line O'. I didn't start out with goals today. I figured I'd focus on getting a feel for what was mapped and what wasn't, and how the vegetation was. I could've used some more specific goals, like focusing on when to read ahead.

It was hard for me to look ahead, so in the thicker areas I was stopping a lot. Also, lots of mistakes and hard to run through the rocks and brush and stuff. But I did a good job getting a feel for what the boulders and cliffs looked like. Everybody's saying the orienteering will get old fast, but I think I could get a lot of mileage out of a test loop. It would be a good way to get used to running fast in the woods, and it would be fun to alternate w tempos :)

In the meantime, I should focus on having good habits while I'm running slower (planning when to read ahead, being precise with my compass, predicting what I'm about to see, sticking to my plans) and make sure to keep them up as I get in shape.

I was probably actually running for about 30 min.

(rest day)

Made it to my friend's apartment, and my car made it to a free parking spot! Lori and Stephen also helped me prevent a foot injury with tape and ibuprofen:) Can't wait to go for my first run in Boston tomorrow morning!
