running warm up/down 13:00 [3] 1.44 mi (9:00 / mi)

orienteering 2:14:05 [3] 8.5 km (15:46 / km) +150m 14:30 / km

Beat Mike up until number 5. I don't think you can really count anything that happened after 2 controls weren't there. I win.

Actually... After looking at my course I was kind of disappointed I lost my focus after the 2 controls were missing. Part of it was fatigue and dehydration, but I was definitely unfocused and wishy-washy about my not-so-great-in-the-first-place plan to 8. On 9 I felt like I didn't hold myself accountable because part of me still wasn't confident there would be a control there.

In the future, I would regroup by visualizing an early leg that went well, or else a training I did without controls. I know I should have been going slow on 9 and not moving on until I saw the feature I was looking for. I think what happened was I was just too tired/dehydrated/distracted to continue on the course without making a conscious effort to remind myself of habits that usually take care of themselves.

running 30:00 [3] 3.4 mi (8:49 / mi)

orienteering 1:42:06 [3] 8.7 km (11:44 / km) +130m 10:55 / km

Some scale problems at the beginning, contour interval problems in the middle. The entire time I avoided any conscious distance estimation, which was lazy of me.

Largest mistake was about 7 minutes on number 3, where instead of following my compass I decided to try to read which was the actual crossing, which was really hard. I couldn't tell the difference between crossable and uncrossable marsh. Ugggh if only I'd stuck to my original plan!!! Turns out my sense of distance wasn't too good, and I tried to cross several uncrossable places and got stuck. Moral of the story: stick to the plan!

The rest was hesitations and a bit of trouble choosing my route to 6/following the stream. Not great but not bad either.
