running 20:05 [3] 2.23 mi (9:00 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Radius #2

Ran on the indoor track. Coach Stiles wrote on my log: "Wow, those orienteering skills must've come in handy!" The first thing that came to my mind was that half the reason his jokes are funny is because they're kind of lame, but at least he's on good enough terms with orienteering to make jokes about it.

orienteering 1:22:53 [3] 6.78 km (12:13 / km)
shoes: Brooks Radius #2

So aside from a 17 minute mistake, my course went pretty well. I guess the mistake made me slow down and think.
I had a lot more to write about this course earlier in the week, but it is now Thursday.
Um.... I was very intimidated by Anna Urbanova's finish split. Although I did have a very smooth last several controls, learning from yesterday's sprint-like end of the course. I even dropped the 2 people I was with because I was thinking clearly enough to make smart route choices!

The goal was to stay slow, running a clean course. Oops! It worked for the first part of the course, and then there were a lot of running legs where I didn't have to do much navigation. I thought to myself, "Hey, if I were designing this course, I'd put more technical stuff after these running legs to trip people up." And then by the end of the course, I saw all the yellow on the map and got excited and ran fast and lost a lot of time.

Also, I wasn't checking my compass very much and I relied too much on the indistinct trails then couldn't follow them.

Other than that, it was a successful run, good for my first time back racing. I didn't mispunch, and I didn't bomb. Rick Breseman and John Campbell beat me by about 8 and 6 minutes. That definitely makes me regret not being in control more while I was running, because I know I made about that many minutes' worth of mistakes.

Tomorrow: Check my compass, beware of uncrossable fences, and make map-reading primary.

Note
(rest day)

AAAAAHHHH! Going to Texas! My first A-meet in 18 months, I think.
The plan: stay calm, get familiar w/ the map today, then tomorrow check all my control codes, focus on a clean run instead of running fast, and not worry about other runners.

running 20:30 [3] 2.28 mi (9:00 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Radius #2

Ran w/ team on their warmup for the workout. Includes 3 min. extended run.

aqua-jogging 1:10:04 [2]

In the pool w/ Opp. He only had to do 30 minutes, so I was by myself for 40 and got bored. I'm getting spoiled now that I don't have to aqua-jog as much!

running 16:00 [4] 2.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

My first workout in 9 months!!!!! Yay!!!!!!! My first Wash U workout ever! Woohoo!

4x (3 min. on, 1 min. off).

Pretty fun, a relief after my 4-hour lab--titrations the whole time. I had adrenaline all day, which used to happen all the time in high school, but it's been so long since I've run a workout that I'd forgotten the feeling.

So the actual workout...an old man passed me, but I think he was a fast old man. Other than that, my legs felt solid, my form felt natural going up the hills (a change from recent runs), and I'm not tired at all the day after.

Went to Center Court afterwards and had corn on the cob, a biscuit, part of a sweet potato pie, Nature Valley granola, and some tofu thing. It was supposed to be soul food night, but the greens and mac & cheese got mixed reviews. Also, there was a conspicuous lack of sweet potatoes. It was really good, though.

the Splasher was there again tonight. Uggghh! I should make it in the morning more often.

running 20:09 [3]

Ran in the rec gym. I kept thinking about the finish chute in Texas; I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I should make sure I don't focus too much on running. All I need is 2 clean races.

aqua-jogging 59:00 [2]

Studying Chem w/ Gus & Skyler. Not very productive, actually, but it's not that you can do practice exams in the pool.
