2007 Billygoat. More later.

Thoughts on this years Billygoat:

As we were driving to the event in the steady rain, I wondered if this was a really good decision and told Paul I thought it was 50:50 that I would finish - given my ongoing allergy and chest cold problems.

Got to the meet site and were off on our vetting runs about 20 minutes after getting out of the car. Still overcast, misty and damp in the woods. Told Paul we would go until our projected finishing time of 3 hours, but that he might need to leave me if I couldn't keep the pace.

On the trail run to the first control, I had to stop for a minute or so to clear the fluid out of my lungs. This was an ongoing theme throughout the run. There was also that distinct shortness of breathe on the uphills. Fortunately, Paul stayed with me. I remember looking at my watch during the uphill legs thinking there was no way I was going to finish this thing and that maybe it would have been better to go with T to her godson's first communion (She was very, very understanding about the importance of the Billygoat in my life. Must be love.)

Despite being sodden and tired during the first part of the course, we were spiking the controls and not losing any time due to technical errors. By the time we had reached #5, both my mood and the weather were improving. Although we would be pretty wet throughout the run, the fact it was longer rainy cheered both of us up. Was beginning to think we could make it in time.

Actually did some running during the downhill legs and despite the almost constant need to hack up a furball, we continued to make decent time and have no technical mistakes. A bit of twinging in one leg, but no serious cramping issues.

We swung near the start on the way to #23 and could hear the murmur of people getting ready for their start, but neither of us wanted to divert from getting finished.

Finished together and were on our way to the airport within 1/2 hour. Made it with time to spare and with only minor aches and pains. Nice afternoon.

Nice event despite the JJ curse of the pre-starters having better running conditions than the regular starters. Despite my sickness and the rainy weather, it was a good Goat and my complements to Glen, Janet and the rest of the EMPO folks.

45 minutes on stationary bike. Still not feeling great, but the medication should help.

Fitness Center 35:00 [3] 3.0 mi (11:40 / mi)
max:158 (sick)

35 minutes on the treadmill at the fitness center. Even that was a bit of effort with all the allergies and cold problems I've have over the last week. On the positive side, the knees and hip don't hurt and I continue to lose weight. The Goat may be a bit problematic. Figure to give it my best shot and see what happens. Fingers crossed.
