Awesomely fun, 4-summit day with Andy in the Mummy Range. Tough to pull off though, given MA and I got back from camping late last night...
Still: up at 2:55 am, backing out of driveway at 3:10am. Met Andy @ Dunraven Trailhead, and we were moving by 5am.
Up North Fork of the Big Thompson to Happily Lost Campground. From there, most of the rest of the day was off trail (that's right: >50% of our 30 miles were offtrail, which makes this a VERY FINE THURSDAY).
The climb up Mt Dickinson (Summit 1) was pretty intense: 2,300 feet in barely over 1 mile. Complete with several hundred feet of bushwhacking, which I loved a lot. The winds were brutal on the way up. We nearly called it quits, but decided to push onto summit 2 in hopes of improved conditions.
Up and over a couple of unnamed bumpes to Mt Dunraven (Summit 2). Still windy, but we found some shelter next to a rock. Thought we make final call down below Dunraven and in between Mummy/Hagues Saddle while filling watter. Down there, the winds tapered.
We headed up to summit of Mummy Mtn (Summit 3). A fun climb that included about 1200 ft gain from the saddle. Ate a bit of food and enjoyed the still calming winds.
Headed back down to saddle then made the traverse over to Hagues Peak (Summit 4, and the highest peak in Larimer County). Very rocky on the ascent but all very tolerable and for some of us, even fun!
Descended just above the headwaters of the North Fork of the Big Thompson all the way to finally joining the trail at Lost Lake. Rode this one 10 miles back to the parking lot, where we arrived 11hrs and 45mins after our pre-dawn start.
Ate plenty, drank plenty, felt good all day... prob because there was more hiking than running. Even my legs felt great after 30 miles and nearly 10k gain. Strange...
There are spectacular views of so many different mountain ranges from this vantage, from the Never Summers to the Zirkels, the entirety of ROMO and the Front Range, and all those high peaks that start up near I-70. And then there is the equally spectacular view of Rowe Glacier Lake - the third highest lake in the United States...
