Long's Peak with Matt. Rather impromptu. We had our first (very light) snows the morning before, so thought we'd wait to see if the skies cleared as predicted. They did, so we hit the trail walking at 11:15.
Our route: a very non-traditional one via the southern coulior. Started at Sandbeach Lake Trailhead (sandbeach lake = WOW!), and after spotting a beautiful Cooper's Hawk near the trailhead with a couple of hikers, Matt and I didn't see a soul. Had the entire assent... AND THE SUMMIT (on a Saturday!) to ourselves. Of course, that could be because we didn't reach the summit until 5 pm. Oh well, not a cloud in the sky. The summit was vast, flat, and rocky. Reminded me of a tepui....albeit a very dry one.
Minimal ice on coulior ascent (but we brought the ax just in case), but a fair amt of snow on the descent, between summit and keyhole. (We went down the 'standard' route, to see something new.... the landscape was so very lunar!). On said descent, I shared a long, close encounter with a pair of brown-capped rosy finches... my new favorite bird--a near endemic to Colorado.
Last 2 hrs hiking were in the dark. Met a pair of kind souls just before parking lot and hitched a ride back to our car, ca. 5 miles. 11:15 - 8:55 pm in total, including several stops.
My first 14er in Colorado. Felt great the entire way but couldn't eat much when I got home.
Very little botany... most of it past, except for the common people.
