Whoa.

I came into this race thinking, "I could pull a Seahawks and finish the season with two wins to take the series title. Not probably, but possible." This then caused me to worry that by being hyper-aware of the scenario, I would try too hard or run too fast and blow my chances on a big mistake.

Fortunately, while I was standing in the start chute, it struck me that to win: I didn't have to do anything differently. I won Putney by running my own race. I could win Camp River Ranch by doing the same thing; I did not have to run extra fast. I was relieved to come to this realization.

However, that did not prevent me from running around like a chicken after the start, in an attempt to get out to the road. Fortunately, I had a stretch of road (along the beautiful river!) to get my shit together and calm down.

#1 - 1st / 1st
Per Route Gadget, it looks like Gina, Ing, and I all identified the path to the right as the only obvious way out. It's less direct, but I think it was better to make the decision faster, and the route was a little safer with less navigating.

This is a mistake that didn't feel like a mistake, just a lot of hesitation.

Climbing. Hiked the steep parts. Collected myself before taking my bearing into the woods. Aimed straight for it, because I wasn't sure what aiming off would accomplish. I guess sometimes you just have to go straight for it? Was about 20-30 feet left of it when I saw it.

I tried pace-counting without actually measuring the distance on the map, but just eyeballing that it was about 100m or less. Stopped early because I saw a streamer, then the depression. Turns out the streamer is forestry stuff and unrelated anyway.

This turned out to be my best route choice of the day! I gained at least a minute on everyone. Patrick took the same route and it was one of his best splits as well.

This is an example of how I've improved. When I got to the top of the hill, the area was a bit weird. I started going towards one side of the hill to begin looking for the rootstock, but then my compass alerted me that I was not quite on the right side of the hill. So I ignored all the confusing small details, and just paid attention to the hill shape and direction, and found the rootstock no problem. A few years ago it would have taken me much longer to figure this out.

My one regret of the race. Somehow, I interpreted the marsh as being uphill from me (I KNOW IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE) which is how I ruled out taking the more direct squiggly trail. But once I realized it was downhill, I changed my mind (stopped in my tracks, turned around) and took it. Once I experienced how twisty it was, I knew it was the poorer route choice. Oh well. Lost a minute to Ing here who took the better, western route.

Starting to feel less zesty. Only lost a small amount of time, I think due to micro route choice near the circle. When I left the rootstock, I found a much easier elephant track than the way I had come in.

I don't know why I thought it was better to stay left. It was really better to go in on the actual trail the control was on. Fortunately, this route choice penalty was small.

#11 - 8th / 1st
I kept trying to flick the hand-drawn depression off of my map because it looked like dirt. Ha! This was a weird one because Eileen and Kate updated the map with the new dead-end trail and depression, but when they sent it to Mike and he made his changes, it came back without Eileen and Kate's changes.

#12 - 2nd / 1st
It took me a bit to shake off the wonkiness of 11 and begin running down the trail. Hesitation crept back in periodically, and I chastised myself because I had some distinct collecting features that I was headed towards. Walking up the trunk of this rootstock was fun!

Oh, and I was also thinking about what I would do to number 13. I did curse the course designers. ;) Schwack or around? Schwack or around? I felt like it was going to be a TRAP!!

#13 - 5th / 1st
But then I saw that the veg was actually pretty good, and didn't regret schwacking. Though it wasn't one my faster splits. I did prairie dog a few times because I got nervous that I would float the wrong way-- this is exactly how I blew my race at CRR last time! But then I saw a building and went for it. Building was a bit to the right of where I was going. Ing did a great job of schwacking faster. Not sure which way Nina Lady went, but I am guessing she ran hella fast around.

#14 - 5th / 1st
Going to the east of the building didn't save any time, and just confused me when I got to the trails. I'm surprised I didn't go left of the building, since that seems more like my style.

#15 - 10th / 2nd
A for-real mistake! I overran this one. When I saw the hill, I knew I went too far. A good recovery though. Ing took the lead from me here!

Whoops! Went to #19 first. Fortunately, this was on the way-ish. I identified the ride here and shot a bearing off that, but then defaulted to just looking around at the landscape, trying to detect the subtle re-entrant. Back in the lead. A lot of people made big mistakes on this leg. Nina dumped a lot of time here, which took her out of striking distance. (If 2.5 minutes is considered "striking distance")

#17 - 2nd / 1st
Nina outran me, but my lead on her is large at this point.

#18 - 2nd / 1st
Not a lot of 1st place splits left for me here, until the Go control. But I retain my lead by avoiding mistakes made by many on 16 and 18.

Also, I like how I considered taking the trail around, but a huge downed tree cinched the decision to schwack a bearing.

#19 - 2nd / 1st
A lot of hesitation running this, since it's weird to follow something and not make decisions. ha! But I didn't want to haul ass only to arrive at 19 confused and a HR too high to make a good decision to 20.

A lot of hesitation confirming that I really did have to go down to the water to get back to the finish. Ing did not hesitate, she put a minute into me! Also, my attack on the control was a, "jump into the forest and look around" method, which isn't super efficient.

AHH, TOO MANY POINT FEATURES! What do they all mean?! Oh, look- I can identify the garden as the olive green circle. I found the trail via the garden.

#Fin - 1st / 1st !!!
I didn't feel fast when I started the race, and I got tired in the middle, but I was ready to see what my sprint would be like. It felt great! I was only 1 second behind Eric Bone (did he jog?) and I BEAT Will Enger because he effed around on his way in. Beat Patrick too (come on, Patrick!). Though I think all these guys ran their whole race harder than I did. Still fun to compare.

So... I won!

Again, a lot of key players were missing. So, not quite as satisfying as it could be. I wish that at least Marissa was in the mix. BUT. I do feel like I had a decent race (not amazing, but decent) wrought from avoiding big mistakes and improved fitness. So I will freaking take it.

I can win the series (!!!) with a 2nd place, so long as Marissa doesn't win. I think I have good chances.

But. After Heather told me that she may be "hanging up her o' shoes for good," she sees my result and says that she "may race" though her foot hurt the last time she tried to run. Oh, Heather. She doesn't care much about orienteering, but she sure is competitive.

So if Heather shows up, the best I can do in the series is 2nd (because she'll win, obviously), which I've done once before.

A short mid-day run to break up my computer time and make sure I still know how to run IRL. Surged up to tempo a few times, and a short sprint.

Felt tweaky-ness in my R knee (patellar area) early in the run, but then warmed up and it was fine. I'm optimistically predicting that this will become more of an issue with paved running than orienteering.
