Orienteering race 45:25 intensity: (5:00 @2) + (10:00 @3) + (25:00 @4) + (5:25 @5) **
ahr:177 max:192 21c shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212

1- Fine. Trails not mapped as expected, but I got to the top of the hill and found it anyway!

2- Fine, if a pinch hesitant to duck into a clearing that was mapped as open forest.

3- Yay! I did a good job running through the buildings. I had my Caution hat on.

4- Good. Was hard to distinguish the smaller building from the big one, due to tree cover, but I was paying attention well.

5- Around route was easy

6- Another 'around' route, gave me time to look ahead on the map. (Wow! 7 is a long leg!)

7- Ran on the road! Took my gloves off and also read ahead on the map during this section.

8- This was placed way closer to the open veg than the map suggests.

9- Easy. Trying to stay calm. Saw Julie somewhere around 7-8-9 and trying to stay focused.

10- Good

11- Aw, crap. (saw Julie again), ran a bit east before changing my mind, turning around, and running west. After crossing the creek, I was not really sure where on the hillside I was, but I kept telling myself to keep climbing, because I had to go up anyway. Oh, yay- the confusing flat part! I remember this. Stood for a moment. Then ran down a trail with my best guess, then saw my #14 which confirmed my theory (and Shara too!). Entered from the thinner veg side.

12- trails

13- cut across 2 trails, then trail

14- trail

15- haha. When I got to the creek crossing, I stood looking at my map wondering which creek crossing it was (I wasn't sure the first time either...). Then I remembered seeing Heather punch a control here. Doh! haha. It's right there.

16- trail

17- climbed this hillside, which lost me time

18- HA HA. 180 degree error. Ran the wrong way for 10 or 20 yards, then had to U-turn.

18, 19- easy

20- tried to be fancy and run via the indistinct area and actually ran PAST my control (ah, heart rate is rising at the end of the race! ;) and thankfully, finally checked that control. Hey, it's mine!

F- RUN! Hit 192bpm

Not good: control 11 was a mess, and control 20 was silly.

Good: overall, kept my HR under control and it paid off well! May not have beat Heather, but I had a decent race! Felt pretty clearheaded most of the time (except the creek crossing muddled me).

Hike to SnowBowl hut! Too bad there wasn't enough snow for snowshoeing, but yaktraking was fun too.
