Note

Rock Creek Ramble was very briefly cancelled since the BLM was over-busy and denied our permit- but Rex Harder saved the day and Rock Creek lives on in the same scab land terrain, with better access from I-90 to boot!

RCR is right up there with Vancouver Sprint Camp as one of my favorite orienteering events that I refuse to miss each year.

RCR features unique scab land terrain, which is not only beautiful (hello basalt cliffs!) but provides an special opportunity to really hone in contour reading skills since there is little to no tree/veg to obscure your view of the landscape!

I suppose it also has special meaning for me, since my first year at RCR, it was my very first rogaine ever. I did the 4-hour with Shara and we SPRINTED to the finish and had just 20 seconds to spare, panting in laughter, and wishing we had signed up for a longer event! Oh- and it was the first orienteering video I'd ever made!! https://vimeo.com/22494301
(sorry for the shakiness.. I've since upgraded to a GoPro instead of hand held wobbling!)

My next time at RCR, I had more rogaines under my belt and I competed in the 7 hour SOLO for the first time. Wow- that was special. I don't really feel compelled to do more rogaines solo, but I really wanted to do it at least once. Being lost and alone.. uh.. builds character. My writing, photos and video on that experience can be found here:

So RCR lives on!

And I hope to see ya'll there. ;)

Cheers.
