Lipica Open Day 1

So happy I made it home to Trieste and then up to Lipica for this week-end. Great weather, great competition and courses, great company. Drove 750km with Olivier from JOG (french national team athlete), and two italian friends living in Annecy and Merano respectively.

Very fast middle course, with many many short controls in succession. Physically felt ok, though I can get in much better shape in a couple of weeks now that I am doing well again. Technically I encountered my main enemy, which is keeping concentration for the whole race. I didn't really have huge technical problems for large parts of the race, with generally good splits and a homogeneous performance, but in the middle I had my typical 7-8 minutes of orienteering blackout (not reading the map, running way too fast, forgetting the importance of wise route choices) which never ends very well. My main goal for the months to come is to work on this, forcing myself during training and races to not run without orienteering well at all times. It doesn't make sense to run well, train hard physically if afterward I end up standing around 20-30 meters from the flag, knowing I'm really close to it but failing to find it because I was having my de-concentration period during the leg and was just looking at the compass and not reading the map.

First healthy race of the season, gave me a lot of feedback on what I have to work on, and am fortunate to be able to race almost every weekend from now to August and use races as high quality training where to wage improvement. Next week there is a Sprint in Milano, and I will be in attendance. : )

Easy Run 40:51 [0] 8.01 km (5:06 / km) +49m 4:57 / km

Made it back home early today so was able to run in the sun still. Feels so much nicer than the dark 7pm usual post-work environment.

Warmup 15:20 [0] 2.46 km (6:14 / km) +43m 5:44 / km

Orienteering 42:33 [0] 6.34 km (6:42 / km) +170m 5:55 / km

Orient'Alp training, night-o. Reading exercise on an easy sprint map. Focus was reading a different map (of Fontainebleau) on the way back from each control. It was a very productive exercise for me, as reading while running is something i still need to work a lot on. it was nice to train focus for 40+ minutes in the dark, and I was quite tired mentally by the end. Nice. Also, feeling even better than yesterday, it seems like my health problems are really going away after some much needed rest.

Cool down 13:35 [0] 1.59 km (8:31 / km) +31m 7:46 / km
